James Smith, who was stabbed to (jgqth }i) the alleged affray Chinamen on Monday night, was held this morning before Mr Robinson, District Coroner, The evidence of Dr Gilford showed that three punctured wounds were inflicted on the deceased, one on tlio outside of the left knee and two on the left arm. The blow on the kneo sovored the popliteal artery, aud daath wag caused by the excessive flow of blood from this wound, The doctor was of ppinion that the blow on the leg was not intended to cause death, as it iya3 only by the slightest chance the artery was severed, Hobbs, one of the participants in the fight, stated that in the earlier part of Monday evening ho and two Others threw stones on the Ohinainena' liiit fronj thfl road, They then returqed to the tppship, and at 11 o'clock several other young fellows joined themaud a band of seven again visited the huts, which, they assailed with stones. Three Chinamen rushed out from behind a gorso fence, and the lads to?k to their heels, the deceased lagging behind. The Chinamen soon made up to him, and as he called for lielp Hobbs returned to his assisfewi Oflo Chinaman was then holding Smith by 'the neck and one by the legs, and both Chinamen had knives in hand, Witness distinctly saw one Chinaman stab deceased in the arm and one in the leg, Witness could'not identifytlio Chinamen in custody on tlje charge of murder, The ofher young men then returned tq tlje attack, and witness saw one of the .Chinamen knocked down jby a rail thrown at him.
