The Wairarapa Daily. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1890.
It is understood that tho Knights of Labor in Masterlon solect this week by voto the candidate which their Assembly will support in the present contest. Tho result of their verdict is regarded with considerable interest, but it would boa mistake to attach an unduo importance to it. Tho support of the order would undoubtedly confer a coilain amount of prestige upon either of the liberal candidates who are expecting to obtain it, but it will not ensure their success, ; though in one instance it may prove latal should it be adverse, As we understand it, the membeis of this order are bound to uphold certain principles which unite them, but they are not pledged by their constitution to vote at the bidding of even a majority of their number. In the Masterton election there may be two and possibly threo candidates who accept the principles of the order,, and who may therefore be regarded as eligible for support. Although a ballot be taken for the selection of a candidate, members may, consistently with their pledges, vote for any man whom they may think most likely to represont their views, and it is quite possible that the hundred or more Knightly votes, as the case may be, may, be pretty evenly distributed between two or more candidates. Mr Hogg spas instrumental in establishing the order in Masterton, and is considered to have a stropg ploim upon it for political support, ljut t)|en ho is not a member of it, he is an outsider, and it is quite possible that .within the secret pjrcje itself therp ipy be, as at Palmerston North, some genuine working member who may be invited to come forward, If this be tlie dase, "* tt. Mr lieClH'dle has A larger yote in "-, . V'-V of, the order than Mr «f tbe'lattet ijitho Hogg, the chances k. . '-«« very Masterton electoral district a., poor. Some time ago we expressed ■ a doubt as to whether Mr Hogg would go. to the poll, ( and;although ho h'aV declared , himself to be a candidate we still i entertain a conviction that it,will not be a prudent step for hini to fight out. the election if the labor party which;, hehas organised in' this, town is •: divided, No doubt lie is in, earnest : inhis belief.that"' he; represents the liberal party of -the district' and his manifesto is a sincere one, but the party which he claims to represent is not strong enough to place two candidates in the field, and tho ■ records of previous elections indicato that Mr, McCardle is likely to poll tbe greater number of votes. Tho strengthof the opposite parly, the party which
we;lmye been-accustomed V support' .was'shown ot-the Inst election, when * it was ablo'to maintain two candi- ' dates in tliefieldngiiiustionodn the labor Bide, and. .theni to win; hands ] down.. 'The'labor parly-or .liberal party in tho Masterton electorate is not a very strong ono, for it is probable the number of working men who voted against the labor candidate at the last election was as great as that of tho B»ns of toil who supported him. One of tho marked features of the last election, in fact, was the number pf workers who openly avowed themselves as the supporters of Mr Beethnm. Mr Hogg is,now an old campaigner, and his strategical move m establishing n,i assembly of Knights of Labor in Masterton and then opening up branches in every part of the electorate Was a bold one and displayed generalship, but he niado a mistake in electing to keep outside the assembly, and it lias virtually grown out of his -control. Ho probably knows very little more about the working of this order than we do, i He wants to make it a political I committee for his ownadvantage, but s the members take, as far as wo can i hear, an independent position, No 1 dotibt'it was intended .that a certain political candidate should be "the workman" in the present flection I and that the Knights of Labor 1 should be"tho, tool"obedient,to his hand, but the "Knigh'ts : have' evidently an idea that their order is" tho work- - man" and such candidate as they may select shillbo their [aithfuftool, Our ■■•' own lmpvcssioh is that Mr Hogg n made a mistake in calling; into . existence in this town an ordor of which ho is not a working member. He managed very well with his ■ old " liberal association, but he got. a little amongst tho breakois with his singlo tax society and now with bi& Knights of Labor he is not unlikely to founder f\ altogether, e ° d . i d . : —; -~- —. ■■■ 6 Operations at the Petono woollen , works wore resumed yesterday morning A list of entries for Mr F H .Wood's 0 next Taratahi stuck salo appears to-day. 0 The Mauricevillo Road Board has 0 decided to erect an office for its own '•) use on tho land offored by Mr Gundec ; d son,, |y Tho usual parade of tho Mastertor Rifle Volunteers will bo held on Thurs ,j daynoxt, :e A new school is to be opened al ig Kititawa, near Pahiatua, next week ly Mrs Swan will be the mistross, "J Tho ordinary fortnightly meeting o f the Mwtorton Borough Council will bi *• held this evening. 10 It is rumoured that Mr W 0 Sniitl is going to stand for Waipawo, am Napier at tho forthcoming election, .
