MASTERTON-OPAKI JOCKEY CLUB.
Tho annual meeting of tbe.Master-toh-Opaki Jockey Club was hold in the Club Hotel o"n Saturday evening last, about twenty members being present, Tho chair was occupied by the President, Mr T, E. Chamberlain.
Tho minutes of tbe previous meet' ing were read and confirmed,
The statement of receipts and expenditure was read, which showed a debit balance of £IBO lie m The liabilities were reported as. #1667 2s 2d and the assets £IBOS 6s, leaying a credit of £l3B. , ,•, i The report of the auditapns read as-follows:—■" We)your auditors, have to report that owing 1 ; in management, and circumst&ces with which tho members of the Club are familiar, the books and vouchers have been kept in au unsatisfactory manner, and a strict audit ot the accounts would requiro much time and expense without the chance of adequate result. The 'balance sheet prepared by Mr Sellar is as fair astatemeutas oanbeexpected and has been examined by us, and we recommend its acceptance. We would draw attention to what" appears to its the critical position the Club occupies in being in arrears of interoat on the mortgage, and therefore liable to foreclosure,"
. The President, in placing the statement before the meeting, said tho Club was behind in consequence of change of officers. He was back in his rent himself, but he had never
been applied to for tho monoy. When | everything was paid, they would bo about £l5O in value to the good, Ho would move that the report and balance-sheet ho adopted, Mr T, G, Mason seconded, and in
doing so said it was unfortunate the Club had drifted into ita present
position, This was owing to the lack of energy on the part ol the. late Secretary, It was tho Club's misfortune in having procured the
services of such a Secretary, Mr T. Brown said ho would like a
ittlo further explanation on this
point, He did not know how they could saddle the past Secretary with the charge of neglect, Mr Mason replied that tho only explanation ,he could give was that the subscriptions of members had not been collected and the rent had not been applied for. Mr Brown said he was quite satisfied with the explanation, Tho motion for the adoption of the
report was then put and carried, . Tho report of the Subcommittee on the financial position of tho Club
was read and adopted,
Tho election of officers for the ensuing? year was then proceeded with, with the following result: — President,Mr A, Walker; Secretary, Mrß, H, Wadc'ington; Judge, Mr, A, W, Cave (unanimously re-elected); Treasurer, Mr A. Elkins (re-elected); Handicapper, Mr A, Macfarlane; Clerk of Scales, Mr B, Hare; Clerk of Course, Mr W. lorns; Timekeeper, Mr James Muir; Starter, Mr T. H. Hill; Stewards—Messrs Brown, Macara, J, lorns, Henderson, W. Hirschberg, Yallaoce, Cowper, E. Chamberlain, and B. Cave. Messrs Dalrymple and Hathaway were appoiuted Auditors. Mr A. Walker, in returning thanks for the position in which he had been placed, stated that ho would do his best to have the financial position of the Club reversed by the next annual meeting (applause.) It was resolved that a two days' summer moeting be held on the same day ns last year, viz,, Boxing Day | and tho day following, Two new membors wcro unanimously elected,Votes of thanks to the retiring officers and tho Chairman wero passed, Tho noxt general meeting, to consider programmo, etc., is to be held on Saturday next,
