The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1890.

The liberals, or ratuer ilie radicals of this electoral district, aro extremely anxious that there should not be two candidates on their side, splitting votes in the coining election. The other side, which we take to be the farmers and settlers generally of the district, will do well to see that their votes are not diyided by rival cundiates. The seat is absolutely safe and certain if settlers lieep ' together. Should they separate their forces they will simply'band it over to the strikers and boycotters who are engaged at the present time in running them. The main thing to bear in mind is |lmt under no circumstances must tl]Q sent be fjivon away to the Maritime Council for the benefit of the trade unions of New Zetland.

We understand that it would be possible for the ongines on our local railway to be run with short lengths of maire in placeofcoalif an adequate supply were obtainabloat a reasonable price, It would be a wise procedure for the Commissioners toinvite tenders for a thousand cords or so of this wood in suitable lengths, for then and'only then they would be in a position to say that the cost wa'p, beyond their reach. An effort in this direction would also show that the Commissioners are not unwilling, as many people Imagine tljpjii fo be, to resume the daily train service. Of course coal will shortly bo available, "but in the interim tlio Commissioners should, we consider, substitute wood as a fuel.

Mr Balukce has made a spocoli in which hp has ghown wh[tt an admirable and highly useful opposition he and his friends mako, The same gentlemen a few years back were not a success as a Ministerial party, and it is gratifying to know that they have found another career in which they can do justice to their admitted talents, As an Opposition they are the light !?}ei] in s)(> right pjace, and we trust they will long remain in a'posjtion whioh they are evidently intended to adorn, Ur Ballancc, it must be conceded, lias kept his men together very well throughout the session, better, indeed, than on any former occasion, hut this was as much due to the absence pf the Premier from the Houseas it was to. Ills own generalship,. whioh consists more in the muviter in mode than in the forliter in re,

The Post of yesterday,' writing as a party organ says" The Minister of Lands lias left for tho South' without filling up the vacancies .yliioh exist on the Wellington .Wa§|e Ipijs

Board, Mr McCardlo's appointment is a member lapsed by effluxion ot tiiae on the .18th, and Mr Bunny's on the 21st instant. The Board is to meet to-morrow, when possibly there wilbot bo a quorum, and important busineSs'may have to be put off, to the great inconvenience of thepublic. The neglect to fill up the vacancies is mpst reprehensible. Probably the Minister of Lands does not like the idea of re-appointing Messrs McOardle unci Bunny, because these gentlemen possess a knowledge of the land laws mid conditions of settlement in this Provincial District which he entirely lacks, and being men of independent minds, have, as members of the Board, once or twice caused the Minister some trouble, There are, however, no men in the district bettor fitted for tho position than they are, In any case the seats should not bo vacant." It is, perhaps, unreasonable to expect the Government to re-appoint two political opponents to tho Board, but the- vacancies ought certainly to be filled at as early a date as possible.
