The strike of vanmen and carters is having a serious effect on trade. Nineteen. of the crew; of tho steamer Saxton, who were arrested - for refusing to shovel a small quantity of coal irom the hatchways so that tlie hatches might be put on, have been-acquitted on technical grounds. The Mayor has received a letter ro m the shipowners stating that the latter are'now discussing the question of ships'articles, which will be ready *. at an early date," and if the men accept the terms they will be engaged without delay. The Labour Defence Committ3e has oalled out the amalgamated engineers to the number of 2000, -J who - are not conneoted with tho F" marine engineers.
