not to return to their work until the present difficulty is settled, and some of them assert that they will' " sell their last stick rather than cave in,". Since the strike began here between 170 and 180 free labourers have been engaged- through the local office of the Union Company. A number of tho carters who went out on strike have returned to work, Diwedin, September 16. The Union Steamship Company propose to resume their ordinary tunning as soon as the boats can be got into position, The usual timetable service will be carried out. The Union Company have received news by cable of two cargoes of coal having left Brisbane, and two more cargoes are on the way from Newcastle, There are 6000 tons of coal for the Company on the way to New Zealand. Arrangements have been made for other cargoes to follow. In the face of this and the fact that there is a good stock on hand, also that supplies have been received in New Zealand in different quarters outside of wines usually drawn upon, the Company have no hesitation in coaling the Direct steamers. Accordingly instructions have been given to coal the Doric at LjtteUon so that she will be able to sail for England at timo-table date, The Very Latost. IMPORTANTPROPOSALOFTHE RAILWAY EXECUTIVE. The Railway Executive telegraphed yesterday to tho Commissioners, asking them if tho latter would receiyo a deputation from the Executive to confer about the present unsatisfactory stato of suspense, and if possiblo arrango for the re-instate-lnent of the nien called out, Tho Commissioners replied to-day that if they agreed to reinstato tho men there would be no guarantee that they might not be called out when it suited the Executive. They cannot consent to such a mischievous precedent and cannot reinstato the men. The reply winds' up : " After tho attempt which you ]». made to paralyse the public and introduce-into it illegal and disorderly practices, the Commissioners decline to moot you or further disouss tlnsmatter with you,"
