LIBRARY MEETING AT WAIORONGA.
As a Bomewhatone-sided report' of the meeting held at Waioronga was recently published in a Masterton paper, we have been favoured by a settler who was present with the following correct aocount 'of the pro 1 ceedings ; Agener'alnieeting of the subscribers to the Uriti Library was held on Saturday.Septeniber 6, at Waioronga. Present-Mr Etchings, in tho chair, Mr W Bennett, Treasurer, Mr Vere White, Secretary, Messrs Tatham, Toogood, Kummer, Paulen, and two or three others whose subscriptions were paid up. Also a number of new subscribers. Moved by Mr E E Meredith that the Library be moved from Beaumont to Mr Yere White's, seconded by Mr Toogood. The Chairman opposed the motion because he did not think that Mr White had the necessary accommodation for such a number of books, some three or four hundred,
Mr White replied that he would not have offered to take charge of the Library unless he had a room to put ikiuto, The Chairman then asked the Treasurer,.Mr Bennett, what subscriptions he had received, The Treasurer replied that the only subscriptions that he had received were from Messrs Hitchings,Tatham, Kummer, Paulsen, and his own.
Mr White, the Secretary, laid upon the table a memo of those entitled to vote, at tho general meeting on September 6. Replying to a question put by the Chairman, lie said that he was responsible for the quarterly subscription of 2s 6d each for tho members who had lately joined tho Library.
The Chairman said' that there were only ono or two in the room besides the committee who were entitled to vote, He drew attention to by-law 18, which says that no person shall vote at any meeting unless he he an annual subscriber, In. the minute book, of the library jt reads: At a committee meeting held at Petersen's on .March 81st 1884, notice of motion was-given to Mr Lancaster that at the next meeting he would move that no person be entitled to. vote at any general meeting of the Uriti Library unless he be an annual subsoriber.
At a meeting at Petersen's on June 22nd, 1884, notioo of motion of Mr Lancaster, requalification to vote was put and carried. The objeot of this by-law was to prevent a number of men paying half-a-crown as quarterly subscription, joining the library and voting at- the meeting {for measures that possibly the majority ot annual pd permanent members were of opinion would be detrimental to the welfare of the Library and subscribers. Aftor considerable discussion tho Chairman refused to take the votes of any but annual subscribers. .Mr B. R, Meredith proposed that the Chairman be asked to levre the chair. This was put and carried. .
Mr Meredith was tlien voted to tho chair. All of those subscribers whose subscriptions were paid in to the Treasurer then oeasea to'take any part in. the meeting, further than to protest against the' whole' proceedings. The meeting then proceeded to elect a new president, Mr R, B, Meredith, Mr J. N, Meredith as Treasurer and a committee were elected. The library is still in Mr Hitcning'sihouse at Beaumont, who lias'given instructions'to the librarian to issue books to those members whose subscriptions are, paid to the Treasurer, Mr Bennett.- There' will probably bo work for the lawyers to settle the. difficulty,,
