A credit balance of £7 8a 4d was reported, EOUOOt OKAHIS, In compliance with a resolution passed at last meeting, a statement of expenditure of grants was received from the Fornridge and Catholic schools. The Chairman stated that the; Masterton SohooU Committee had sent in a statement of the whole of its expenditure, and not as to the disposal of the Trust grant. He would he inclined to move that the statement be referred back to the
Committee for the speoiflo information required, Mr Eton thought the Catholic and Pernndge school funds had not been expended on educational matters. The Chairman did not think they had given a full statement, ; The Secretary read a communication from the Masterton School Committee attached to the statement of expenditure, Mr Daniells, who was appointed a 'deputation from tho Masterton Sohool Committee, waited on the Trust, He explained that on the statement put in was the receipts from the Education Board ; ;M tlie Trust. The ordinary- expenditure represented that of the' Eduoation Board, and the , remainder that ot the Trust. ■ The Sohool was £Bl in debt, which had
hm hanging over the Committee for thee yeara. This was incurred over prize money rather indiscreetly,. The £Bl asked for was largely owing to the Cadet Fund, which had been handed them by Mr Grundy. They, were iu'urgent need of this amount, as they had made it a first charge on their funds. ; They wanted the Trußt to assist them, He admitted they had siuned iu spending the money, ' The Chairman said the £Bl had practically been embezzled, It had been taken from Mr Grundy without his authority, It was understood tint out of the £6l granted last year the Cadot Fund money should, be refunded.
Mr Danielle did not agree that the Committee had embezzled the money. It had been given them to hoi? in trust,Mr Eton: If it is not embezzlement it is a breach of trust. MrDaniellß: ldo not think it is
even a breach of trust. We expended the money in prizes, The £sl granted last year has been spent in .extraordinary work such as water supply, pto, The Chairman thought there were certain items in the statement which did not come within the province of the Sohool Committee, They should have been provided by the Education Board,
Mr Darnells explained that in
othor towns they had. been compelled to get up concerts, etc, to meet urgent demands, The Chairman: There has been £2l spent on closets, and I hear they are no good. Mr M-Ewen: But the Board is doing that. The first were no ■good. The Chairman, without wishing to be thought cavilling in the matter, suggested, that the statements be referred back to the various committees, stating that a full account of the expenditure last year was required, MrDaniells wished to know what •the Trust wanted further than they bdgot," The Chairman: We_ waut a balance-sheet of the money granted by the Trust. In this statement the accounts are mixed.' ■■' Mr Daniells: We account for £7 more tharrwe. have got' from the
Trust. • The Chairman: I should like a lesson in such financing. Mr Darnells would like to know exactly what the Trust wanted. The Chairman said they wished a statement of the expenditure regarding prize money, eto. The Trust' hadv before experienced : a .difficulty oyer the £Bl spent in prizes. 'This hid been done without authority. They had to see thai the funds were expended as the Apt rehired. The letter sent to the School-Committee stated that the |Bi" fed to be spent in prize money. Jfpt only bad .the "Committee spent the money from the Cadet fund, but tWy-had used £2Q which did not belong to them, He would move with-reference to the main sobool. that the statement of the expenditure Qfthej|4s;anW&i,.be referred back for a fuller explanation. ..,Mr Eton .seconded,"iHo thoiight the matter ought to be pleared.up./ The motion , ;; was .then put and The Chairman moved that the other {wgatftteaw be' wferted
