ALFREDTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A concert in aid of the new Alfredtou public hall was held on Friday last, and turned out quite a success, I should say that there were quite 100 persons present, Mr Maoquarie presided, and in declaring the hall opened thanked the settlers of Alfredton and others on behalf of the hall committee' for the very generous and general support they had given to the movement. He also thanked the architect who had given his service gratis, and expressed the committee's satisfaction with the manner in whioh the contractor, Mr - had carried out his work. The concert was opened by Miss George with selections on the piano. Tho Hall Committee are very, touch indebted to this lady for glviug them tho use of her piano and her valuable assistance at the concert. The singers were Mrs 8. Smith and Miss George, and Messrs Cxood, Mathieson, George, Cookson, Transom, Pimm, Pitcaithky, Greenwood,Dunderdalti, and G. Benton. Kecitations and readings were given by Messrs L. Maoquarie, Mathieson and Pitcaithky. Selections on the piano were' played by Miss Good, Miss George and Mr Fogden, aiid were Much appreciated, The concert was altogether very enjoyable, and perhaps the most successful held in the district, and where all the performers did so well it would be invidious to mention names; At the close the chairman moved a vote of thanks to the performers for the excellent entertainment given, and Mr Good replied and moved a vote of thanks to the chairman, to tho hall committee, aud to the ladies and gentlemen who had so tastefully decorated the hall. After the concert a ball was held and kept up untjl 5 a.m. Perhaps it will not be out of place to give a short description of the hall. It is built on a site near the fioad Board Office and almost at the' junction of all the roads in the district. It is not a large building, being only 40 x 20, but it is a very handsome and substantially built, The frqnt is rusticated, the remainder plain weather boarding with iron roofing. It is a good height, the studs beiug twelve feet, With open roof, tho floor is of dressed matai, the promotion having an eye to tho "lightfantastic toe." At present it is match lined with rimu for a height of six, feet' The hall is rented to tho Education Board for an aided sohqol am] \vill be used as a chpreh, and - for concerts eto, I should think that the settlers must feel very muoh indebted to the promotion for supplying a felt- want. The total cost of building with seats and platform is over £IOO, and I am glad to say that the debt of the Hall Company only amounts to something like £2O, a sum that ought to be wiped oat without any difficulty, If' the settlers who are not already: share : ' holders prove true 4o "thV best .iptTOteofthe dietrid -
