A NOVEL CHANNEL PASSAGE.
A now method of crossing the has been iuvented by M. liunau Varilla., The. inventor can claim for his clu'd complete novelty anda sorting of dashing variety which is charming. The proposition is to have a pier half-a mile long on each aids of the channel. -These viaducts would be connected with a tunnel by means of a tube. It sounds so soft - that it is surprising the idea has not been received with more enthusiasm. It would not cost more than the tunnel, and the latter by being helped out with piers, so to speak, would Be two hundred yards shorter than that suggested by Sir Pyramid Watkm, When war broke out the intervening viaduct would h immediately broken, and the trains then in transit could swim out as was convenient. It is a noble plan, uud meets all stragetic difficulties, as will be seen on the flooding principle. Nevertheless, it can wait. A little ml de mtr on the part of a few landsmen hardly seems sufficient cause for spending many millions .sterling. <
