EDUCATION BOARD.
1 . The ordinary meeting of the Education Board was held on Wednesday. ; Present, Mr J. R. Blair (Chairman), Messrs H. Bunny, A. W, Brown, G. Beetham, M.H.R., W. C. Buohanan, M.H.R., F. H. Fraser, and Rev. J. Paterson, The pay-sheet, amounting to £288873 lid, was passed for payment and agreed to. Mr James Mills, who has resigned the mastership ot the Mauriceville Sohool, wrote asking that his services be retained, and that he be appointed to a school io another locality. The application was not entertained, Mr Lee, teacher at Otaki, asked that his services may be retained by the Board. Mr Fraser said that so far as he could ascertain Mr Lee, although he did not agree very well with his Committee, posseesed the entire confidence of the whole of the district, except of six persons. _ The Chairmau said that the Otaki Sohool was a mixed one, and contained a great number of Maoris. _ It required special qualifications to conduct such a mixed sohool as Otaki was, A petition was read from 6G heads of families residing in Otaki, who represented 111 children praying that Mr Lee should bo retained at Otaki. A committee, consisting of Messrs J Young, A W Brown, and Fraser was appointed to investigate the matter of Mr Lee's application, Ti]e resignation of Miss Maiy J Thomas, assistant teacher at Eketahuna, aud Miss Jessie Fenwiok, pupil teacher at Kaiwaiwai, were accopted. Mr Ohas Weston was appointed I teaoher at Alfredton, and Mr OH ] Savage teaoher at Grassendalo, An application was received from the residents at'Whakataki, asking that a ' sohoolhouse bo ereotod at that place. At present the Bohoolisiuatomporary ] sohool room, Mr MoHutohon waited upon the Board and supported the ' application. Mr MoHutohon remarked that tlie present room had been' erected by himself aud another person, and what the resi'deuts now wished was additions to the sohoolroom, at an ' estimated cost of about £llO. The ' next section was half an acre with a !
two roomed house on it, whioh could be bought for £IOO. Mr MoHutohon offered a quarter pre, and. tho settlers named offered another quarter acre. The matter was left over. The application of the Belvedere School Committee for j£ls for drainage purposes was referred to a sub-committee, The question of a water supply at Sbaunon was left'in the hands of the Chairman of the Board. The sum of £1 was
granted for repairs at the Judgelord bchool. Mr U. Allen called attention to some damage occasioned to his property by childron attending the Thdrndon Sohool. The matter was referred to the Bchool Committee, A obnimunication was received from the Wndestown Sohool Committee, statiiig that scarlet fever had broken out in that place, and asking if the sohool should be closed, I| was decided to advise the School Committse that the Board had no power to order the sghwi to bo oljsgd, and reoonimending the Committee to insist on children who had been ill from the fever bringing a .doctor's, certificate of complete convalescence on returning to school. The Board then went into committee.
