The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, JULY 31, 1890.

The Committee of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association may be congratulated on their bucccss in getting together, bo large! a number of excollont exhibits as were presented yesterday in tbo Drill IJnll. There was, perhaps, some minor points oil which it can hardly he felicitated, as there was some dissatisfaction occasioned by tbo fact that, for nearly an hour after the advertised time for opening, tbo doors were olosed against the public and for a still longer period prize tickets were unattached to fortunate exhibits and catalogues were unready. Several causes were assigned for these shortcomings, but it would servo r.o good purpose io specify them or dilate upon them. The Committee on certain points of detail has.had an experience on this occasion which will no doubt be of value to it in the future. It is perhaps a common failing of many of those who connect themselves with vol uu teer work in looal committees to leavo the willing liorso to do all (ho work, heedless of the consideration as to whether the willing horse is equal to the task. The majority of members of a committee frequently do nothing but give their names to a cause and relegate all responsibilities to a small minority of their colleagues. When this is the case, any blame which may be attached to shortcomings ought to be levied against the many who do little and not against the few who do much. In spite of minor drawbacks 1 the show of yesterday was distinctly j in advance of its worthy predecessors, and for this step forward wo have to ] thank one or two of the larger ' exhibitors, who spared neither trouble nor oxpense to build up the show. 1 It is pleasing to find, even in these 1 dull times, so large au interest taken J in the propagation and improvement j of domestic pets, Let us hope that < the present, admirable .show will I materially'increase the number of 1 poultry fanciers in this district and ' stimulate yfipg and old to win prizes } on future occasions. • More fpprqits j are needed in the poultry field to swell the ranks of breeders, who will 1 have to sustain the prestige of the c Wairarapa at the shows of the future, ' The poultry craze does not rank 0 amongst either the expensive or ovic- T ions hobbies of the-day; it is a . healthy pursuit that can be taken up a inexpensively and followed profitably 8 aud it is open to either man, woman 5 or child. It is a very safe hobby ll indeed for young people and wo trust 5 as the association grows it will he able to dwglop special juvenile classes n which will eqpduragef qmnMipii in 1 poultry rearing amongst boys ancW girls. _ A Poultry, Pigeon and Canary' b! Association can and does do muob good in a community, and it should ! receive on all sides such friendly help | as way lis |o its growth' -j, aqd foyejo / . t«

Tub Evening referring to the second school site lh Ibis town, eays: 1' It is tli'o intention of the Education' Bonn},to erect a kindergarten school (it Masterton, liud' ths.-: Committee, ivliioli was appointed recently to visit M aaterton and ascertain the probability of obtaining a suitable site sent in l llieir. report. to (lie Board at tlio meeting this morning. Seven sections were reported as being favorable out af those offered, hud it was decided to nccopt. that of; Mr • G W Woodroofe, Halistreot, at £890,. Taking into advantage however; |tlw greater knowledge of the local Committee on the wants of "the - district,-' the situation and the probable growth of the population as compared with this Committee, tlio above reponimendation was mado, '.The report was adopted.'' It will be seen that the Board places on the shoulders of the locaj Committee the onus of filling in the hollow in the centre of the new site, and the sootier the Committee faces tliia difficulty the better, otherwise there is a prospect of the new structure being indefinitely hung up
