CORRESPONDENCE.
Master Parrlora and BusifsUoxß.
(To the Editor).
J: Sia—l notice by the report of the proaeedinga of tlio last meeting of, th.B'" Trades and Labor Oouucil" two questions very seriously affeotiug this -distriot- were brodght forward, and appear'. to have met with ,'" sympathy" from the Oounoil. Ist, The "Master Farriers "wrote, asking assisianc9iii/or«'/iy certain employers to conform to their scale of charges. This request \is so utterly .ridipulous,'■„ that any 'saiie Oounoil: might ;liave( been expected, to simply laugh at it.' Of course employers will ■ entirely refuse to be so forced.; The, only result of the attempt possible,-is to compel such; employers to makethenv, selves iridepehdent'bi'iheirwould-bo mastars, ; , If such "a, thing as thimn be done in New Zealand, we had 'far better emigrate to Russia, where no such interference. with /individual liberty^would be tolerated;;;for a' moment, and; We havethe Martiriboro bushfellera asking foe advice as toformihga Unioni which, it appears, • the Secretary was instructed to give. It would be most interesting, to' know what this • advice has been,; iu all probability it k.taconwtl their unfortunate employers' to:do-some-thing which thoy think very right and proper. The'buslifellers may, however, take it'as absolutely.oertain: that the only answer of the employers will be-" Theie is the bush, 'say what you want per'acre for felling it, according" to specifications. - If your price suit? me,' go to" work : ; if hot, there is an end of the niatter, and if no one else will do it at niy price," it won't ba done at'all.", Free contwot, arid rigid adherence to specifications, are the two'principles on whioh' all suoh work must'be done, if at, all, and any interference will surely mean the entire stoppage of the large expenditure of oupital now going ou in that neighborhood, It so happens that more labour is being employed there: than in any other part of the Wairarapa, but'ithfl employersara quite ro'auy to stop tlieir operations at a moment's notice, if their freedom of action is to be in any way interfered with.—l am, &c Common Sesse,
The Library Rate. (to the editor. Sir,—ln referring to my notice of motion re library in your issue of yesterday you are in error in* stating that 1 desire it to be a free library. Mypropoßalia tlmt all ratepayers paying six and eight penoe and over as a library rate, shall be free members, and all those paying twenty shillings and over shall havo. double privilege, At 'present Jwe '■ have ninety-one ratepaying members whose library rale ranges from one penny 'up to two pounds ten Bhillings, and this arrangement will re* duoe the number by thirty-throe,'and our income eight pounds' five shillings, whiok I do not think will seriously aileot the financial position of the library, In any case it will not necessitate another penny rate. "With referenoe to the demand on tho books, if there was a hundred more subscribers there are plenty of books,, as all the oldbobks would be now to them. Further, I would ask you, sir, do you consider it fair and just that the ratepayers who contribute from two to three pounds -by speoial rate, to the library fund should be placed on the same 'looting as those who only contribute from ouo penny to a Blulling.;to the; samej fund, and be asked to pay another five sbillingß if they require a book ? This injustice has been oarried on long enough in my opinion, and I hope the Council will soo it in thesamolightj andgive effect to my proposal. I am, &o. Thomas DikbV Mastorton, July 11. •
