Wellington, Wednesday, The libel notion, Butcher v.' 'J. Paylon, proprietor of the Wajrarapa Daily, Masterton, bogan this morning. The claim is £IOOO for damaging paragraphs, alleged to bo prejudicial lo tlio plaintiff, which led to his dismissal by his employers, The defonce iB the denial of any libel, and that the plaintiff was not dismissed in consequence of the paragraphs." Liter.
A. W. Hogg was the first witness called, who was followed by J. J. Smith, and the plaintiff. On the Court adjourning at one io'olook Butcher had not been cross-examined by Mr Gully. ■ Uniformity in SoM Boob. Welukoton, Wednesday. The Masterton School Committee wrote to .'the Board of Education asking that a greater uniformity should be observed in the class books. The Board to-day decided to reply, stating that so far as profirienoy was concerned, uniformity was rigidly observed,
