CUP MATCHES. The first round, of matches for" tke Wairarapa Eugby Union's Caps was played in the various centres on Saturday, and from all appearances the: honors'ot Behior and junior ohampious will be played for.this season with a greater, amount of interest than in previous 'years,'' ea'oh club, fancying its own ohanoes the best, The principal match'' on Saturday was that between the Bed Star and Greytown, firsts, whioh took plabe on the ! ifesetve in *he latter township, resulting, - after a really splendid game, in a win for Greytbwn by 7 points to one, The result -was not unexpected,: as .the Stars!had considerably the "weakest team they have placed in the field' this season, only ten of the picked men playing. This was accounted for by the prevailing siokness, and the team was made up'by five of the second .fifteen. The Greytbwn club this' year have been greatly strengthened by the inclusion of some new blood, and the splendid way in which they played together on Saturday gave'one the opinion that ' the 1 Senior Cup is not far from their reaoh this season. The gams commenced punctually,' with Messrs Maguire and T. Wallace as umpires, and Mr W. MoKenzie ■as referee, a good number ofspeotators witnessing tbe game. From tbe start it .was evident that Greytown were .the strongest team, for they immediately penned the Stare in their twenty-fives and although the Stars would several times by splendid play relieve their territory, the fast return of the Greytown forwards would be inevitable. The aggressors were very strong in back play, and their correct passing and smart picking up. was the principal feature'ot the game, About ten minutes after the game commenced, Uru received a good pass from Webster, and in a moment sent' the ball over the bar,, making three point'sforGreytown.Onplayresuming, the Stars took the ball to the other end by a grand loose dribble, and kept it out of danger for some time, but some correct passing between MoOarty, Uru, and Udy, gave the latter a chance, whioh he immediately look advantage of, and a. try was registered, Uru making ut poster of the place. Soon after, the irrepressible Uru seoured the ball, and fell over the line at the far corner, and although at a very difficult .angle Udy secured the three points, by putting the ball between the posts. The Staranow warmed to their work, and play they did, the collaring of their forwards drawing forth cheers from the spectators, When half-time was called, they had the play at the Greytown end, oaoh man working like a slave to win-biok their laurels. The second spell was more in favor of-the Stars than the previous one, Greytown being unable to soars. L'Aroy was now playing three-quarter, and in this position ho • seemed to .greatly strengthen his team. Felling and D'Aroy several times but were always brought low before the coveted line was reached. .After a grand rußh by Greytown, D'Arcy collared a pretty pass from' Pelling, and getting into his stride ran from his own ground right round the opposing team/drawing first score for the Stars amidst applause. Felling tailed to register. This proved to be the only score during the seoond half, although both teams made desperate attempts, The whistle blew with Greytown two goals and one try to one try. The winners from start to finish played a magnificent, game, Mitohell, Beard, Tai, and Jngley in the forwards proving towers of strength and agility. But where they gained the advantage was in the back play, their three-quarters Udy, MoOarty, and Uru passing, running, and kicking in splendid stylo, the latter especially winning golden opinions for his good tempered play. The Stars must be complimented on their defensive play, time after time averting what seemed a certain score. Their forward play was excellent, but in the baok division they were greatly deficient. The whole of the forwards played well, but were considerably, lighter than tbeir opponents, D'Arcy and Pelling were the principal baoks, and did a tremendous lot of the hard work in grand style. They expeot to meet their Greytown opponents under better circumstances on the return matoh, and a very interesting game may be looked forward to.
The Junior Cup m&toh between the Greytown Fire Brigade, and the seoond fifteen of the Masterton Club was played oil tile Worksop road ground on Saturday, resulting in' a win for the former by eight points (a goal and five tries) to love. The grouud was in good condition, and' there, was a fair attendance of spectators. During the firs.t spell the game was evenly contested, the visitors scoring but one point. At the commencement of the second, however, thelooil boys presented the appearance of being "fagged.out," and their opponents had. it all their own way, and it must be said that from their form they deserved to win, _ The Masterton • team were handioapped through not having played together before, and-their defeat_ should arouse them to the necessity of going in for assiduous praotice. The game was played in a friendly manner throughout, and. at its oonclksion vooiferous cheers were exohanged.'
