• Sib. others, I fully expected that either Mr Beetham or Mr Buchanan, or both of these' gentlemen, in their recent utterances would have enlightened their constituents on a certain subject, but as both have studiously avoided it, will you permit me to ask them to reply through your columns to this question: Do you Mr Beetham, and do you Mr Buchanan: consider you were doing right when you permitted the Government to buy for your use with publio money, golden ornaments to hang on your watch-ohains ? The Eketahuna Tollgato. {To the Editor.) Sin.—Travelling through the Forty Bush yesterday by ooaob. I noticed the Wairarapa North County Engineer,' together with Cr Von Redinof that'.Council, apparently fixing a sitb for the proposed tollgate, I had thought that tho motion passed at a special meeting of the Wairarapa North Counoil deciding to erect a toll near, the Pahiatuaj boundary would in all probability have been reconsidered by them before positively taking action, Is it possible that the Counoil can be so short sighted that thoy cannot see that their aotionin, erecting this toll will be a barrier to the trade between ibis county and Wairarapa North ? Does its member? not known that the settlers of this, district are doing business with Masterton every year to the extent of several thousands of pounds m produce of various kinds, by the purobase of flour, oats, wheat, chaff, general merchandise and stock? And the settlers here are reciprocating by . sending Masterton any produce they may have tli'at ''will suit their market.
