The speoial meeting to consider the balance sheet was adjourned as the auditor had not finished his work; THE EKETAHUNA TOH,. Regarding the erection of the tollgate at Eketahuna, proposed at the speoial meeting recently held, Cr. Maunsell thought they should re-con-sider their decision. They might approach the Pahiatua Counoil and see if some better arrangementscould not be come to. The Chairman thought the Pahiatua County were greatly interested in the road, They should, however, as a Council, take a broad-view of the matter, It was a great pity it had been merged from a colonial road into aroadtojbe supported by .the poorest riding in the County, The Pahiatua County, if requested, might provide a sum of money for the maintenance of the road. Cr Stuokey. moved that unless a favorable reply be received frpm the Pahiatua County Council within 14 days, the tollgate be" erected. Or Von Redin seconded.—Carried. Striking op Rates. Sr.Dagg moved that the general rates, as proposed at the special meeting, be struck forthwith. Cr Handyside seconded, Cr Von Redin moved as. an amendment" That a general rate t of $d in the £ be struok , over the Oounty, instead of separate 1 rates in the different ridings." Cr Dagg thought that such an amendmeut would effect a radical ohange, and should be considered at a full meeting of the Counoil.
The Chairman was of opinion that Councillors should have been apprised of such an important amendment before the meeting. Cr Von Bedin was quite willing that his amendment be considered at next meeing so long as the proposed rates were not adopted, Cr Maunsell thought every member should be apprised of such a movement.
• Cr Stuokey.moved that the consideration of the report of the special meeting re striking of rates be postponed till next meeting. Cr You Kedin seconded.-Carried. ENGINEER'S EEPORI. ' The report of the Engineer was read and adopted. WHEEI/MRES ON COACHES. A petition was read from a ; number of ratepayers in the Whareama and East Coast Districts, asking that the mail coaoh of Mr T. P. Lett be exempt from the operations of the wheeltire by-law, as it would seriously affect the delivery of the mails. •
Mr Lett, who was present, stated that he had been asked by people of the district to run his coach, and he found that by using broad tires it would be altogether impracticable. Cr Haunsell said this by-law affected the Wainuioru, Cashpoint, and Masterton districts more particularly interested. It was a question whethe'r the' ratepayers would contribute the equivalent caused by the damage to the road by the relaxation of the by-law. Jf the privilege were granted the coaches would have to be carefully watohed. . Cr Murray proposed that the prayer of the petition be granted. He thought the running of the coach would do very'little more'harm than thebrakgs. '■ " .'. ' :' '' ' Cr Handyside seconded, ' Cr Stuckoy • stated that at the last nieetirie; of the Counoil a motion had been passed that the coach of Mr Lett be not exempted. Ho would like to know if they could go behind this resolution. '■" " Cr Von Eedjn; Notice of motion will have tojbe giyen that the present resolution be rescinded.
