Altredton Licensing Committee.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) • A meeting of the above Committee : was held on Tuesday, June 10th. Present-Messrs Anderson (chair. mail), Syverson, Saunders, Harding, and Bright. The minutes of the previous meeting wore read and confirmed. ■ The Inspector reported on the proposed hotel for which alicense was '■', applied for by Mr Ellison. Theobjeclions were that the house and premises weraunsuited for an hotel, Mr Tosswill appearedin support of the application, and Mr Beard opposed. _ Mr Beard said that his first objection was that the application had not been advertised for the required time, Judgo Williams, he stated, was very clear on this point, Mr Tosswill said the applioatiou had been advertised for the specified time,.
_ Mr Beard replied that the adver-' tißemenfc appeared on Fridny,Baturday, ind Monday, That was not three dear days at set down by Judge Williams, ami again as laid down by Judge Ward. Further, no license could be granted to a house not in existence. The house rhuat be in existence beforo the license could bo granted, The action of the applicant in placing a small quantity oE timber on the ground to mislead the Bench could '• not be commended, On these grounds no license wuld bo granted, Mr Tosßwill said this was the first' notice ho had received of objection. He must apply for an adjournment, : Mr Board objected to an adjourn- \ inont on the ground that there was no house in existence to grant an adjournment for; in fact tbero was'' no application before the Benoh to deal with, and no licenso could be granted, Constable Boache said ha could go further than Mr Beard and prove that tho application had not been advertised at all, . The constable hero read the advertisement,. whiolj stated that it was inserted for the house the applioant was using at the time,

MrTosswill replied, giving 'a case in point at Palaiatuaj Mr Bright said there -was one' thing he objected to. Nothing had: bfef' done, and'yet 'at the last rqoraentihp applicant came and .applied ' fqr a license. Mr Beard said that Mr Egan owqed the property,' Mr Spillane made'an explanation, Egan got the lease, and ho paid £§ towards it, Mr Tosswill called on Mr Crewe, - who stated that Egan came to him at Pahiatua, and naked him to get a reliable man to apply for a lloepse. He told him if he brought him the license ho would give him the money, : Ho pointed out to him that he would have to build the house, and badbought some timber/ Mi Beard said there seemed to be conflicting interests. Toohill for a renewal of license for the Universal Hoiol was granted, the Inspector's report being favorable, The application of Thomas Parsons, of the Eketahuna hotel, was granted, With regard to tho application of Maurioo Kellihor, the Inspector's -report was not entirely favorable. W Tire applicant: Iwish to invito the to inspect the premises, The Chairman stated ho had, with Constable Koacho, inspected the house. It was fairly cleun, but just outside tho back door the servant hud emptied tho slops out of the window, The stables were very dirty, and the closets were quite unGt for : uso, Last Saturday hs went agaiu, and it was very much in the samo condition, although the yard hud teen cleaned a little, Tho stable and closets were the same; quite unfit for use. It was iHamentablo fact that a housoliko ™is should., bo so close, to the school. Ho complained bcciiiisp it was dun. gerous to'tho health of the children. A fever would break out unless the yard was kept cleaner than it was. The license was grunted on the understanding that if the yards and houso were not kept in a better state at the next quarterly meeting it would be forfeited, The police haviug reported favorably, a renewal of license was grated to S, M. 6eorge of the Alfredtou accommodation house, Tho meeting then adjourned till next month,
