A Curious Case.

A. curious caso was heard in the ; Resident 'Magistrate's Court to-day, Some time a?o a traveller named Moreton. biought an action against the' Union Steamship Company for the. loss or a portmanteau, He claimed £55, and recovered judgment tor £2O. His solicitor, Mr Cresswell, handed him £l2 fo, the balance being retained ..for costs in excess oi the amount allowed by.the Court, Moreton now brought an action against Mr Cresswell for the amouut retained, Judgment was reserved. A Starving Woman. Christohurcii, June 10, "■ A few dajsago a poor woman in a state of extreme exhaustion staggered into Mrs Thomson's grocery shop in Colombo street. The proprietress thought at fust, that. the woman was suffering froni drink. A moment's examination of the poor croature this impression, 'and an inquiry proved that her weakness was caused by absolute starvation, This was on a Saturday, and the only sustenance the woman had had since the previous Monday was a loaf of bread given her by a neighbor, which the recipient divided with ber aged mother. Prompt relief was given, and inquiries were made which proved without a doubt that the case was a most pitiable one, A visit to her cottage at Sydenham in which the two poor women lived, showed that, whilst the floors were scrupulously olean, tbey had almost no furniture and no food; Both are well-known to the neighbors as well conducted and indusl'rious. Though their immediate necessities are cared for, and they are now in receipt of rations from the Charitablo Aid Hoard, they are in arrears for rent.
A Butcher's Union. Auckland, June 10. To-night, at a largo meeting of butoher assistants, and slaughtermen, it was decided to-fqrm a union, to be called the Auckland Federated Butcher's Union. Mr A, M, Sloan was,, chosen president, and other officers were elected, a oommitteo being also appointed to draw up rules, etc.

gravel. On the motion of Cr Dixon the matter was referred to the Works Committee. Cr Mabon drew attention to tho fact that the Queen-street crossings were in a deplorable condition during winter mouths and required scraping. Cr Gapper stated that the Overseer had been instructed to do the work.. Cr Chamberlain moved that-the
balance of fence in Benall-street be ] moved back, as the lease had fallen in, Afewstumps would require removing. : Cr Gapper said that-before the " fence, could be removed culverts would have to.be inserted. Cr [Chamberlain should have referred the matter to the. Works Committee for'an estimate,' Cr Chamberlain said he was quite willing that this should be done. . Or Hessey thought they could; as the leases had fallen in, give,Mr Reiiall notice to remove the cottage. The Town Clerk said .a lease of Mr H. Jones had not yet fallen iu. ,' Cr Dixon considered tho expense of removing the cotta'ges would be trifling.; - ■ ■

Mr Jones objected to the fence being moved back unless his rent was lowered. After considerable further discussion the matter was referred to the Works Committee for report. .
