The ordinary monthly,meeting of the above named body ,"waß held at the BoronghCouncil Chambers last night at 7.80 p.m. ' Present—Messrs Lowes,.Eton, Eenall, McEwen, arid'B. P, Perry, The Clerk reported the return' of Messrs Lowe3 and Eton unopposed. Mr Wi Lowes'' was again elected to the chair, Tiio minutes of the last meetingwere read and confirmed, The' .Chairman ■ said in going) through' the minutes it wouldpU necessary to allude to the fact that their last ordinary'meeting badfallen on a Good Friday, and he thought the beat course would be to. postpono it till the following-Friday, He had therefore instructed the. Clerk to do so,- and on the next ocoasion as only Mr' MoEwen' attended,. the meeting lapsedfor.wantof a.quoram. Unfortunately it so happened that this made Mr BenallV third absence. That gentleman was present on- this occasion and he was glad to see him, ■for if he had had to.dsclare Mr Benall's seat vaoant it would have; been with great regret., - He therefore would rule that the lapsed meeting. Bhould not count, and that wouldsave an election although he felt i%?>' Mr Renall would be again returned.' Mr Eenall: considered where a meeting lapsed for want of a quoram, it was not a ionajkk meeting, The more calling of a meeting did not constitute a meeting, and a man could not very well be absent from some,thing which did not take place. rule ought to be made to meet sucn oases, .
Mr Eton;thought a r ule of that sort would have too many loop-holes. Members might make it up to stay away when they liked. The matter was allowed to drop at this stage. A deputation froni'tlie Fire Brigade waited on.the Trustees with reference to obtaining a site at Kuripuni, for a Fire Brigade Station. , Mr Hathawayon behalf of the. deputation explained that they were in possession of an engine and 100 ft of hose, but had hoihedof their own and could he turned out of the premises they now occupied at any moment. Two sites were eligable, one at the corner of Payne St, near Mr Pybua', the other next to Mr Arnold's property, The. Brigade was of opinion that the site near Arnolds was the more suitable! there would be room to dry the hose, aud it would make things a little easior for Wcfo driver, whose duty in oonneetion with the engine was a "labor of love." i The Chairman 'said he th'ougw. they understood the position. The trustees would consider the matter and let themknow shortly,'; • . After the deputation had with, drawn, the matter was discussed at length, it finally being decided to inspect the two sites this (Saturday) morning at 9 o'olook, and in no case to grant the fee-simple. ■■/,. The Clerk informed the Chairman that he had, as instructed, obtained Mr Bunny's opinion as to whether the Trustees could sue for rent in advance,
Mr Bunny was of opinion that they could iu oases where the lease specified advance payments, Mr R, G. Williams wrote asking a reduction of his
Mr MoEwen thought they might do something to meet the case. Mr Eton proposed reducing the rent one shilling per week. The Chairman considered this to bo a bad presedent., , Mr Renallsdd a better way would , be to allow Mr Williams a disoQjfljy of la per week on payment oi hg rent. This course was adopted.' *r! The Chairman raised objections to cectaia rating valuations, pointing out that in one instance a piece of land was bringing in nothings and yet they were asked to pay L2 a year rat«a for it.—Leftover.
The Clerk again brought forward the application from the Borough Council, inviting the Trust to cooperate with thorn in asphalting the footpath infront of their properties. The Chairman said they were not compelled to do' anything in this matter but at the. same time they ought not retard the progress of the town. By asphaltingthe: footpaths they would also .be improving their own property. It was decided that the Borough Council be requested to proceed with the work' whenever the weather should be suitable, ''■'.',. " Bey. W.
