the deceased wis wilfully murdered, i and euspioioii rested on tho accused, The-Coroner declined to accept this verdict, and ms'ructed the jury that they must either bring in a verdict of wilful murder against the accused or an open verdict. The jury retired, ,and on returning the foreman stated there was little prospect of the jury ' arriving at a yerdiot. Tho Coronor instructed them again to retire, and he would receive them again tonight. Later. . Tho jury were locked up till 10 o'clock last night, Tdien the Coroner summoned them before him again. The foreman said lliey were unanimously agreed on the ve'rdict that deceased was wilfully murdered, and suspicion rested on accused, but were not likely to bring in an open verdict, or one ot wilful murder against Mahi Km, The jury accordingly were again locked up all night, and nt 10 o'olooli tliis morning the foreman said they were still unable to bring in any other verdict than the one already read. The Coroner said he must record that as ' an open verdict. The foreman protested against their verdict being 1 taken as an open one, and asked the I Coroner if ho would tako the verdict ' of.three,. The Coroner said he could ' not, as the Act was quite explicit, ' that foar out of six must agree. He . remanded the jury till two o'olook [ this afternoon.

Discovery of Human Bones.

Dunedin, June 2,

A heap of bones, all bleached with exposure, were found late last "evening oil the sandhills near St. Clair. They have been pronounced as the remains of a human being. There wero portions of tho backbone, the small bones of the leg and arui, hut none of the large limbs, and only a portion of the skull bones. They had evidently been lying where found for a number of years, haying probably been buried about the top of one of the sandhills, which are being reduced from year to by tlio wind.

A Curious Difficulty

Auckland, Juno 2.

A curious difficulty has arisen in regard to tho dispute between Garratt Bros, aud the Bootrndkers Union. Garratt Bros, recently informed their hands that in future tliey would employ nono but unionists. The hands were advised to join the Union without delay, and they expressed their willingness to do so. It seems, however, that five of Gavratt'a men are liable to fines amounting to nearly £lO each and cannot pay this money, whilst Garratt Bros, cannot dischargothem as they are under an agreement with them for a certain period,
