[By Telegraph.] ■ (PER UNITED MESS ASSOCIATION. SUPREME COMT. Wellikoton, Monday. The Supreme Court opened tbis morning before Chief Judge Prendergast, In liis address to the Grand Jury bis Honor remarked on the length of the calendar, which, ho\v ever, did not contain any cases of an unusual character, excepting perhaps one which arose out of a recent enactment by which a person charged with criminal offence might give evidence in bis own favor. In this case a person jsvas charged with permitting gambling on his premises, and was said to have given false evidence on his own behalf. A true bill was found against George Smith for burglary.

Custom Returns. Wellington, Monday. Tho customs revenue for tho month of May exclusive of Timaru amountf to L 125,657, against £120,274 for April; and £110,062 for May 1889. Timaru will contribute about £2OOO. The amounts at principal ports' .were:-Auckland, £21,902; Wellington, £24,977; £82,400. The Beer Duty exclusive of Timaru and Westport, was £4,251 as agyinst £4,615 for April last, and £4;147 for May of last year.
