| The annual meeting of the North Wairarapa Hack Bating Club was held yesterday on the Opaki race oourso, the weathor being simply glorious, and tho meeting, from every point of view, a most success--1 ful and enjoyable one. The attendance was considerably abovo the 1 expectations of the stewards, a large numbor of people coming up by the mid-day train from Wellington, and " special coaches running from Oartertcn and Greytown to the course, 1 Tlio racing throughout the day was ' very interesting, some close finishos ; and well contested races being witnessed. The results, however, were not always in favor of the ' 1 popular fancies, as evidenced by the '' ' big dividends paid on some of the [ events. Possibly owing to the fact that there was nothing much on in Wellington or round about, a goodly numbor of the "spoiler" fraternity 1 were attracted to the meeting, but despite the large attendance, they did not seem to bo driving apartioularty profitable trade. People are becoming more wide awake to the flimsy swindles once so successful at race meetings, and the old faoea aro becoming so well known that we fear these gentry will have to seek other dimes, or else change their little games if they wish to continue turning an kmi penny without legitimate work. Atyesterday's meeting Mr T.H.Hill made his first ' appearance as the Club's starter, and wo must congratulate that gentleman on the able way in whioh ho performed his duties, for better starts oould not possibly have been made, no hitch of auy kind occurring, and the horses being got away' well together every ' time. Mr T, Thompson and Mrs Oltaway wero in charge of the publican's booths, their names being a sufficient guarantee for the quality of the liquor dispensed, while the more solid part of the refreshment business was attended to by Mrs Corbett and - a largo staff of assistants. A noticeable feature of the day's sport was that not a single protest was entered, nor was there any mishap, with tbo exception of a spill whioh MoMorran got from Matchless in the. Hurdles, but that this was nothing serious was proved by the same scoring a win witl} Brookfield it] % Birthday Handicap. The lawn was enlivened during the day by the strains, of our Private Band,' and tliey considerably helped the success of the Meeting.
