Creighton to the effect tbat a committee of ways and means have reported a Tariff Bill to Congress for the admission of New Zealand flax free into the United States, ■ The duty at present is fifteen dollars per ton.

A portmanteau lost by a passenger named Morton, travelling between Lyttelton and Napier,- _somo months ago, and for tho loss of wkiob. judgment was given'against the Union Company for £2O, baß turned up. The portmanteau had been sent to the New Zealander Hotel here, along with other luggage.
Land Settlement. Wellington, Saturday. The Minister of Lands has had a return prepared showing the increase of land taken up under settlement conditions, since 1880, In Juno of that year there were 2877 selectors holding 670,867 .acres; attba 81st March, 1885, there were 4256 selectors holding 1,206,219 acres; while at the end of March, 1890. the number had increased to 8818 selectors, holding 1,761,084 acres. The number of agricultural holdings in tho colony at the end of March, 1890, was 88,178, being an. increase ol 2131 over the previous year. The increase last year was 1049 over the annual average for the last six years,
