The Wairarapa Daily FRIDAY, MAY 23, 1890. THE SICK MAN.
The burning personal question in political circles now, is Sir Harry Atkinson's intention as to leading liis.party in the coming session. Some saj l lie is fit physically for the ordeal,,bthers that he is altogether too ill Some hold that his appearance in the arena will act as a stimulant, and enable him to throwoff his malady, others that it will inten- ■ sify it, Still, no sign comes from bead quarters as to the course he is really, prepared to take, and it would almost seem as if the Premier ' experienced a grim satisfaction in the perplexity of his political adversaries, who 'know not whether they have to play their cards against "a sick man" or a hale one. If the opposition are called upon to meet Sir Harry, they will, no doubt, on personal grounds, ba extremely sorry to have to worry his life out, but politics are politics, and personal considerations are apt to be overlooked whenever a point is to be scored. That Sir Harry's health has given way to l such an extent that he cannot in justice to himself carry through the , coming session, is abundantly. evident, but then lie lias so much pluck and backbone that he is the last man to discover that he'must succumb. Our own opinion is that Sir Harry desires to take his place next month on the Ministerial benches, and that his friends, .his true friends, who are alive to the long and faithful services he has' rendered to the Colony, and who would like to see him spared for many years to render,-.with restored health, some further measure ol service, are anxious to dissuade him from sacrificing himself, on the present occasion, and would gladly see an arrangement made for Sir John Hall to relieve him. Latterly events have been tending in the direction of Sjr John Hall coming to the resoue. Toe Post, which is generally acourate in its political foretastes, has como to this conclusion, and there is no doubt that some kind of negotiation with this object in view has been carried on for some time past. If Sir Harry Atkinson were really fit for work, we would gladly see him retain office; because one great publio question, "Unionism," which has recently loomed porteutous, on our horizon, would -probably be safer in bis hands than in those of Sir John Hall. Just now this new development of labor agitation threatens to become apoliticalinstrumont, which, like Aaron's rod, will swallow up all the rest. Hut a short while ago it was a cloud no bigger than a man's hand, and now it almost fills our firmament, and men have become afraid of it, Uur new i monarch is the great labor lion which hap to be kept in goo'd temper lest he should use his claws. He has 1 already partly protruded them, and 1 (he sight of the Mf-sheathed j
