Mr Miller, Secretary of ? the Maritime Council, has received the following letter from the Eailway Commissioners in answer to the requests preferred by the deputation which waited upon the Commissioners last week:-"! have the honor'by the direction of the Railway Commis. sioners to inform you that they have given the matter careful consideration and are willing to pay bb from 18th June next ordinary rate per hour for casual labor employed.at ports, such rates not to exceed Is 8d per- hour for general cargo between the hours of 8 a,m. and 5 p.m. With regard to your furtner suggestion that none but members of tho. Union should be. engaged, I am directed to say that the Commissioners will give a preference to Union men but will not guarautee to utilise it exclusively and they reserve the right to use other hands if necessary, E G Piloher, Secretary."
