Tlio Australasian says:—We must candidly confess that in Victoria there is a certain droad of Now Zealand competition. Seeing that a system of local protection has been in vogue for some years, it is only natural that there should be' a party anxious to exclude the produce aud m anufactures, the oats and tweeds, of Mew .Zealand from our markets, But it must be borno in mind on the other hand, that if federation were once accomplished, this unworthy dislike to the neighboring colonies would disappear, for when the day comes that we trade freely with South Australia and Tasmania there .can be no roksoti why tha' sauie privilege of an open maiket in Melbourne should not he eitonded to the great island colony.
An ingenious and important plan for constructing the Channel tunnel has, says the London correspondent of the SlanchestorGuardian, been devised by a distinguished, and professional member of Parliament, and is now teforo Sir Edward Watkin and his colleagues, A great point in thisjplan is that it is supposed to remove theobjections raised by military authorities, it is ascertained that the bed of the channel is so level as to offer gradients of not niore than one in a hundred foot.. The. plan is to construct the tunnel in watertight' lengths of fire or sis hundred feci, tho ■ steel tubes to bo double, the space of two and a half feet between the steel barrels to be filled with Portland cement concrete. These portions of the tunnels, would be stink and adjusted by, hearings of the [ least necessary magnitude : to tho'led "of the Channoi; each being attached to another as the laying proceeded; The progress of the work, if to Bchemo should prove acceptable, would therefore resemble in souio degree the laying of a vast hollow cable from the English-to the French coast. The water level is said to be such that tho top of tho sij'iken .tifnnel would nowheio bo les3;'th'an" bpnt-ath hw water marlfrand the. coat would bo iessthau that of the pier& of tho projected Channel bridge. The danger of invasion is said to be abolished by the fact that at any time the tunnel could be destroyed In mid channel,by lowering and exploding dynamite,
