The Wife Deserter.
Napieu, May 8. Walter Clayton Brown, who was arrested in Wellington on a charge of wife desertion was brought before tho Resident Magistrate to-day He was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, and ordered to find heavy bond for the payment of £1 a week, or in default four months' imprisonment.
The Lye'i-BiiHer Bridge. Lyeil, May 8. - Tho launching of the First girder of a long"*Bpau of tho Lyell-Buller bridge to successfully accomplished to-day. The clean span is IGB feet, and the' weight of each girder is 25 ions as launched. This is the heaviest weight and longest span girder bridge yet undertaken fn this Colony. The girder is' carried across the river on two heavy steel cables by moans of travelling pulleys, and the strain on these cablos waßOver 100 tons, The second girder will be launehed in about a week, and the whole work completed' in about six weeks. Mr A. Anderson, of the firm of J, and A. Anderson, was in I/yell specially to supervise this important work, and carried it to this successful stage.

John Hail read tho address, and referred to the fact that as Resident Magistrate ofLyt(elbn:he l)ad been tho first to officially welcome, the Bishop on his arrival thirty-three years ago. In replying tho Bishop said the address-had over-rated the work he had done, especially in regard to the Church constitution Ha expressed his gfe&t satisfaction that the laity under that constitution, took a prominent part in the work of tho Churoh, He 'tlunked tho laity for their assistance, which had been most valuable, and referred to the kindness and consideration be had received from other denominations, towards whom he had the friendliest feelings.
