New Zealand Hemp.

The following is Mr 0. Bpurling'g . New Zealand Hemp market "report; • dated London, Mavch 21st, 1890;-,, "My last'advicesweroof2lst.ulto!,; U since which the dullness m our market for New Zealand Hemp.'.••• therein referred to has been itensi- ' fied; by a further heavy, fall, and a ." demoralised state of, our; general' Hemp markets, amounting to all but apanio. In the continued absence' of American buying, andtheincreased desire of Importers to ;quit stocks, with an equal determination of buyers jhbreyet'to hold aloof,.prices withvery little passing and the few, sales made during the niohth have been ..j smajl, and these at weekly : declining $ rates, In this unusual and critical state ef markets, Manilla Hemp, has ' takert the load ; with fe decline, prrv 'arrival parcels since 2'lst ultb, to £8 to £lO per ton-Sisal, at £2s|to £25, . ips(sellers),'ehews.a.decline ef £6 to £7i wlsiNew Zealand, of fair and middling qudlity shews an 1 average , decline of £B,to £4; and common 42 10sto£3 lOs j finelogood £2to £Sper ton. 'To account, in any satisfactory way for this extraordinary Btate of the market is all but impossible seeing that the totals ot Manilla Hemp shipped to this country and the States are considerably short of the last two seasons, and Manilla, shippers manifest, at'present but little disposition to meet the unexpected decline in. our market, or to force off their stocks. A general impression exists that the American Syndicate are ; sufficiently, in stock to keep them two ' or three months from foreign supplies of fibre, and that holders therefore havo one of their main props taken from them. Nextto manilla, Bisal hemp shews the greatest decline, good having fallen from £Bl and £B2 (delivered terms) to £25 and £2510 a per ton (sellers), At these latter quotatious Boma considerable parcels from.Progresso, have; been placed here. Having regard' to the extraordinary changeß in the leading articles referred to, it is almo?t surprising that New Zealand Bhould, comparatively, have held its value so well.. It is more than evernecessary, ■ however,' for shippers strongly to ' bear in ' mind-if New Zealaud hemp is still to. hold its own-that whilst other fibres.(sisal particularly) are likely to be in better supply in the near futuro, New Zealand should, and must be, still yet better cleaned and prepared. Now that Now Zealand has for months held its own bo well,. and its uses are better known and recognised, it would indeed be a pity, by flooding our market with poor colored and badly cleaued fibre, that an'; industry so valuable to the Colony should be jeopardised. In sisal hemp—(as a : « substitute for, or admixture with Maiiila)—Now Zealand hemp finds < its strongest competitor the color and cleanliness of thoformerrendenng it a great favorite amongst all rope makers. After so sad and dismal a- : report, it ;is satisfactory to Bay that yesterday and to-day the downward course of the " Bears" has been stopped, and iair Manilla 0 F and I (sold within a day or two as low as ton)today finds buyers at £BB 5s to m Ids, whilst there are buyers of New' Zealand also at 10s to 20s advance. It would be well that the receivers of New Zealand should carefully consider into whose hands thej confide their hemp, inasmuch as "Bears" comprise .brokers, who, whilst supposed to represent the interests of importers, find their account in alternately playing the role of both brokers and jobbers, Arrivals since the 21st ulto. have been very heavy, comprising thoso per" Crusader,"" Wairoa,"" Kylemore," " Auckland,"" Zealander," with a total of 9,080 bales Hemp, and 127 bales Tow, The public Bales total up to 8,681 bales, of which i about one-half has been placed at and ■ since respective sales, Our market h to-day, although still dull and quiet; * closes less depressed than during the last fortnight. Prices current:-Wellington, fine to extra, L 26 to L 29, good, L2B to L2B lOs.mid. to fair, L2l to L 22105, com. to mid. Ll9 to 121, low and ord. (noml.) LlB to Ll9.
