The Wairarapa Daily SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 1890. School Committee Election.
On Monday next the annual election of School Committees by the householders comes round' again. The educational horizon at the present time is fairly calm, and no special interests attached to the function about to be exercised. The Minister ofEducation made a twohours' speech the other day, but as lie did not refer, oven for a passing moment, to the department which he controls, we may assume that there, all is in apple pie order. We have not much reaßon to bo proud of our Minister of Education/because, when there happens to be iu tho Cabinet a man a' ' shade darker than his fellows, they give him this particular appointment. Tho success of the system depends far more on the householders than it does upon the particular lawyer who draws £BOO a year for looking sftor theeduoational portfolio, fordo not the householders olect the Committees, and do not the Committees elect the Boards, which virtually ran the whole concern. As a rule householders discharge theirresponsibilities fairly well, for it is often difficult to get good men to sorve on Committees, because the everyday responsibilities of the latter bodies are very much limited to the prosaic task of keeping the buildings and grounds clean, Still an intelligent Committeo can always ii decided influence upon all mates voting to the institution with which it is connect,of], for though its power of action iB restricted and overshadowed by the Board, it Is alwjjyp jn a position to offer advice, and' no 'sensible ftoiifd disregards its expression of opinion. It is therefore very desirable that parents, interested denply as they must be, in the welfare of their I children, should, at tins opportunity,
earnestly consider who are the best MPB in the community to do the work of tjjeCoiflmittees, and endeavor as far as possible to such men to come forward. The tope fifa school will, to a great extent, be the tone of tho Commi'.teo selected to supervise it. Parents on Monday next have a duty to perform to themselves, to their children at large, and if their duty is conscientiously exorcised, the best results must follow, tfoforfaiwtely■ th'o iwthod
facilitioa often for manning-ft Com- ' mitteo witli an occasional member 1 whose presence, there is incomputable with a perfectly satisfactory adminiatration, This; is one of- the grave drawbacka to carrying out our annual election in the best interests of tho community. An occasional black sheep is perhaps inevitablo under tho cumulativevote, butif settlers do their duty by attending the annual gathering, and exercising their franchise in tho best interests of the community, the evil, though it may not .bo abolished, will at least be minimiesd.
