TnE usual monthly meeting of tba CoramiLtee of the Maiterion School ■ was hold last evening, tliero being present: Messrs Hathaway (in the chair), MoEwen, Prangnell, Hogg, Leahy, and Danielle. An apology <v for- unavoidable absence was road j» .from' the' chairman, Mr A, W,' I lienall. .'•'■■'
The minutes of the previous meeting wero read and confirmed.
The Treasurer reported receipts .amounting to £4B 10s, and expenditure £47 7s Ed. :■■**>&■'
Communications were read from tho various medical officers in the district, stating that there was no eontagious disease amongst children in the town at the present time. The Education Board wrote, 'statingi. that the appointment 'of Mr Kay to* the assistant mastership of the Mastorton School could not be made till after the next meeting of the Board. Mr H.D.Bell wrote, asking for the support of the Committee in his candidature foreleotion to the vacant seat on the Eddcatipn Board, caused by the retirement of' Mr G. Beetham,
The Education Board intimated that the annual election of School Committees wouldbeheldon Monday next, and stated that the assembly of three householders on that occasiofi* would be sufficient to elect a Cora'mittee.' '
Mr Everiss advised tho Committee that oring to failing health ho was .compelled to tender his resignation' of the position held by him in the ISohool.
Mr R. S. Hawkins, who m recently a candidato for the Education Board, offered himself again as a candidate lor nomination to the vacant seat.
After some discussion, Mr Hogg moved {hat Mr Hawkins be nominated as a member of the' Education Board.
Mr Prangnell seconded. 1 • Mr Hathaway moved aB an amend> raenttlmtMrO.Beuthambonomro. ated to the position. Mr Leahy seconded. The amendment was put and lost on the voices, and the motion was therefore declared carried, The appointment of Mr J. Kay to the assistant mastership of the school w«s recommended, \\ ■'Hieheadmasterveported average attendance at tho school during the past.month was-478. j Owing to the weather during the past few days the attendance had been somewhat smaller. Hewaspleasod to be able to state that there was very little sickness in the School. The closets were now oleanod twice a week. Several other improvements had also been made.
Miss Keeling, mistress of the infant's eobool, reported an average attendance of 101, and requested that in view of the winter setting in the grounds be repaired. Mr McEwen suggested that the Borough Council be written to and asked to appoint a Beooud scavenger. Kveryotheroontvaotof tbe Council was let by tender, and there was no reason why this should not be. : A deal of discussion ensued' ffttfo question, tho general opinion being that too high'a price was being paid for cleaning tbe closets. • Tbe matter was eventually allowed to drop. (.S It was decided' to put a' load % gravel in front of the door of the infant school as requested. Tbe followingaccounls were passed for payment:-R. E. Hornblow printing, 6s 6d; F. O'Connor, 19s tid; Z. M. Hoar, 6r, M, Williams, £4l4s6d; J. B. Innes, lM 8s 8d; D.Pickering, 10s 6d. A testimonial, drafted by Mr Hog?, for presentation to Mr A. MoKenzie, who recently resigned his position in the Mastertou Sobool, wae read and subsequently Binned by the members of the Committee.
It was resolved to advertise for tenders for the delivery cf firewood. Messrs Hogg, McEwen. and the Secretary were appointed a subcommittee to draw up a report to be submitted to the annual meeting," and the Secretary was instructed to adopt-the usual course as regards the publication of tho balance-sheet. Mr G. M. Woods waited on the committee and said he bad received a letter from the Secretary, stajre that the olosets had not been prop" cleaned. He had sinco received notice from the Inspector of Nuisanoe to_ clean the olosets twice a week His arrangement with the committee had been to attend once a week. The offensivo smells came from the wells, and he could only suggest as a remedy that they be shut up. Ho expebtmd of course,; extra pay for his extra attendance.
MrMoEwen; You see, Mr Woods, we cannot afford to pay, We are bankrupt.
Mr Woods: If I were to ohargo you by the corporation soale it would cost you £3 where it costs you £\ now.
TheChairinan said they were quite willing to pay extra, but they were not ablo
Mr Woods stated that he could clean the olosets at a oheaper rate if there was lesswater.
It was deoided that Mr Woods be i authorised to remedy the evil as ,regards.Water..;...( T%. Mrßeuallwas appointed visitig member lor the ensuing month, and the committee having discussed upon the probabilities of the forthcoming eleotion, the meeting adjourned.
