Masterton Borough Council.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above Council was kid in the Chambers last evening, I'reseutHiß Worsnip the Mayor, and Crs E. Chamberlain, Gapper, M'Ewen, Dixon, and Mason. From Inspeotor. of Nuisanoes, etating'that lid had filled in the drain at the renr of Mr Perry's property, and enclosing accounts for the work. On the motion of Cr M'Ewen, seconded by Cr Dixon, it was decided to send in the accounts for the work to the owners of the property interested. From Borough of Akaroa, requesting assistance towards erecting 'an; obelisk in commemoration oi tho Jubilfee of the colony. Cr Gapper suggested that the subscription list be forwarded to the Charitable Aid Board. The Mayor; Do anything as far as I am concerned. The communication was received,

' CHARITABLE AID, A 'communication was reoeived from the Wellington Charitablo Aid Goard, making a claim for L 124105, amount due by the Council. The Town Clerk read a copy of a letter he had been requested by the Finance Committee to forward the Board, asking for full particulars regarding tko assessment. Tho Mayor roinarked tliat some action would Have to be taken by the (Jounoil in the matter. Mr Beetham, the representative of the district, was present, and he thought he would be only too willing to convey the voice of the Council to' Parliament, The question liadfor some time been of great importance to them. Mr Bootfaam, M.H.R., by permission of'the Council,. expressed his sorrow at being unable to be present during tho session when tho Charitable Aid Bill tyas introduced. Ho may not havebad much weight in the Houso on the subjeot, but lie would most raised his voice against tlio passing ofsucha measure.He would gladlycarry out the wishes of the Council, as he considered tho present' Bill was a most unjust one. The Mayor asked if any Councillor would move in the matter.

Cr Gapper thought they" might 1 draft a Bill to be presented to members before the coming session. . The Mayor was of opinion that they Bhould invito other local bodies in the district to co-operate in dealing with the question. He would move tliatj Government be petitioned to separate tha Wairarapa from the Wellington Charitable Aid distriot. . Cr Gapper suggested that a special meeting of local bodies in the district be held to discuss the matter.

Cr Dixon thought the Town Clerk should write to looal bodies in the district, asking, that' they appoint delegates to attend a conference on the subject. . CrMasou seconded tha motion of the Mayor, which he theught would answer the purpose. Tho Mayor's motion was then put and oai'ried. Cr Dixon then moved that Local Bodies in. tho district be written to, requesting, them to appoint delegates to attend a conference to deoide matters with reference to tho .introduction of a new Bill during the forthcoming session, : Cr Gapper seconded,

The Mayor suggested that the Town Clerk and. himself bo authorised to arrange affairs with the North County regarding the holding of a conference. CrDixon was quite agreeable to this oourso being adopted, The motion was then put and carried,

The Mayor moved that the Town Clork be instructed to forward an objeotion to the assessment of tbo Charitable Aid Board. Cr Chamberlain seconded, Carried. works committee, Tho report of the Works Committee, which appeared in our last issue, was read and adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee's - report was also read and adoptod, and acoounts amounting to £2Ol 10s passed for payment. Cr Mason thought that all accounts should he passed by committees and certified to. For instance, m the present oase there was an aocount from the Library Committee notoertifiedto.

The Town Clerk remarked that a meeting of the Finance Cummittee bad been oalled but had lapsed for want of a quorum. I Cr Dixon agreed with Gr Mason. I Cr Gapper said no blamo oould be attached to the Town Clerk in the matter. Ho had oalled a meeting and it had lapsed. ' Cr Mason'; When ?

The Mayor: I certainly must call you to order Cr Mason. I cannot tolerate such interjections. Cr Gapper is not sapposcd to have papers at liis finger ends. .Or Mason said if a meeting of the Library Committee had been called daring the last three weeks he had received no notification of the faot, Tho matter after a little further discussion, was allowed to drop. TBNDBRB. The following tenders wore reoeived for formation and metalling in George StreetCavanaghand Co., £8910s; P. Mnlcahy, 10s; liartlott and Co., £45; W; Woolff, £6olos. The tender of Cavanagh and Co. was accepted. general. Cr Dixon eaid complaints had boon made to him of the quality of the metal, or Band, used in the formation of the footpath in front of Mr White's, ChiTcb-Btreet.

Cr ( Gapper explained that ths road was not finished yet. Tho metal had been taken from iii front ol the Courthouse, and put on the foot' path in Churoh-street to fill.up t Cr Dixon said he . was quite satisfied wtih theexplanation. The meeting then adjourned.
