The Tragedy at New Plymouth. ', New PiYHODTn, April 14, A Maori named Milii Kai was charged this morning in the Police Court with the murder of Stephen iMalone/, the old man who was found dead on Saturday afternoon in the Reoreation Grounds..' Inspector Pardy said the police bad evidence that the aooused was seen in .the Reoreation Ground on the Jay of the murder, though bo strongly denied that he had been there Bineo Easter Monday, The police were.collecting evidence which would go to prove that the accused was eeon coming from tho grounds about the time the murder was supposed to have been committod. He asked for a, remand till Monday noxt, In the meantime an inquest could be held, mid perhaps additional light thrown on tho deed. Acousod was remanded.
. Later. . The police are trying to get evidence in the murder case, but so'far they have nothing very tangible, A handkerobief was found on the prisoner which, it was thought, might afford a clue, .as the deceased was supposed to have one identical; • but this was proved incorrect, as the! haiidkerohief could not he identified, From further ovidence it appears that the prisoner has been sponding money somewhat freely since the time of tho murder, and it was known lie had not money before. He has so far failed to satisfactorily, account for tho money, Ho says his father, in Paribaka, sent it to him; but this is not belioyed, as he has niado several different Btatouieuts, another oub being that his brother gave him the money. It is now. thought probable that tho deceased Had several pounds in his possession at the time of tho'murder, as a few days ago he offered to lend a person L 5, which was not accepted,' The police have ascertained.tbat a girl going to the High School on .Friday met a Maori iu the Kecreation , Ground. The prisoner has not yet been identified | by the girl, as she has not seen him since his arrest. She will be taken to the polico station to-morrow for the purpose of identifying him. The funeral of the deceased will take place to-morrow. Subscriptions have been raised for the purpose of giving him a decent burial, otherwise he would have to be buried as a pauper,
