At Nasoby to-day ThomasKeenau, a butcher, was charged with unlawfully, knowingly, and wilfully making a false statement regarding his property to tho Property Tax Coonnissionor, and omitting a largo quantity of bis property. Evidence was given to show that the defendant had £BOOO to his credit in the bauk which .was not mentioned in the return, and he had twice the number of sheep returned, The-defendant plooded guilty, but said it was' not done with intention to defraud. The Resident Magistrate thought the case a flagrant one, an example .should bo made. Ho fixed tho fineat 1100, beside which ha will have to pay three times tho amount of the tax itself, and 13s costs. Walter Inder and Robert Glenn, for failing to furnish statements,were each fined £5, the Deputy-Commissioner not desiring to press tho charges.
