Fatal Boating' Accident. Auckland, March 21. ' iNews of asad boating fatality- by which three lives wore lost' caine to hand from Onehunga to-day. Although the accident, occurred at 4 o'clock on Thursday, the n(iws ; wits' received in Onohunga- only at 2.80 I p.m. to-day, owing to the ' fact that there is no communication, except by road with the scene of the mishap. On Thursday morning. Captain Daniels,: Miss Laura- Cowper (a young lady of 20, who was on a visit to Onehunga), Miss Agnes Lyell (a girl of 14 years),.and two lads named Lyell and Dompgey,' embarked ou 'a fishing excursion, leaving Onehunga ,wharf at 8 o'clock. At that time a Btrong breeze was blowing from the north-east, and the boat was soon off Pahunga, near Maniikau Heads, where Captain Daniels decided to cast anchor and fish. After a time tho wind .increased, -aiid as tlie boat dragged her' anchor the sail was again set. and thoy went to Kakamatua Bay. - After- luncheon; : the anchor was- again weighed, and the party .then, started for Onehunga, between three and four o'clock. On the way the wind fame treacherously from the highland, but • tlierp appeared no danger until a sudden puff sent the boat on its .beam j ends. The mainsail being fast, though she agaiu righted, she sankin ;a few moment's. Miss Cowper weut down with the boat, and was • not seen again, The two boys seized the i oars, and tried to assist Mis Lye)]; but she became exhausted, and letting 1 go the oar was also drowned,; Cap: ' tain Daniels was some distance off ; clinging to an oar, apparently in a strong current, and in a few moments - threw up his hands mid' sank. The r two boys swam ashore, a distance of ! 800 yards, very much exhausted, ! They shortly walked alojig the boach , for two miles and were taken in by - a settler, and the next day they rode i in lo Onehunga afid related the sad .occurrence. Captain .Daniels, was 1 once chief oflieor of the County, of Kintore, and a well-kuowu shipping ; mister; Both young. ladies were ' iuuch esteemed.
