The Wairarapa Daily SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 1890. The New Electoral Boundaries.

We published yesterday a, brief but somewhat inadequate description of (lie new boundaries of the Mastertou and Wairarapa electoral districts, which still retain their old names; thus testifying to the fact that they are among the'more progressive .electoral divisions of tho colony. Twentyone of the old electoral districts, of Now Zealand have been wiped out, aud ,it is satisfactory to know that both Mastertou and Wairarapa were too -vigorous lor obliteration. Tho boundaries we' gave yesterday were somewhat vague, and it was difficult almost to discover irom them in which electoral division the Whiireama district was included, Apparently the great district once kuown as the Wairarapa, subsequently as Wairarapa East and West, and still mora recently as Waiiarapa ; . North and South, is now, for electoral purposes, once more divided into "SVairurapa East aud West; but as yet th's is uncertain, Wairarapa East, uuder the .title of "Wairarapa Electoral District," takes in the Lower Valley and at least part of- the Whareama district, together' with Feathorsion, Greytown, and Carterton;,and Wairavapa West, under > tha name 'of " Masterto'i Electoral District," includes this borough and its surrounding neighborhood, the bush country, and the townships of Eketahuiia, Pahiatua, and Woodville. The cautttes'.who.como forward for these two'large constituencies will have a considerable amount of travelling to accomplish, and tho work of seoui'ing 'a seat in : the -House will be more laborious than ever. Still, there will be the consolation that the

position of the member who represents Mastertou, Eketahuu'a, Pallia■tua, and Woodville, anil of tlie member who represents' 'the almost interminable Wairarapa electorate, will lie a .proud 'one. ,;s<> inferior man will have much chance' in the .coming contest, and we venture to 1 predict that t(io .cpkjjiy as a whale will return to tho next Parliament fewer politicians who li.aye ij.q better recommendation than a ready tongue and consummate assurauie. We are not dissatisfied tbat'Mastertoh and the Bush settlements are to be linked together' under one representative. During the past few, years this town has been drained aiid money to build up the new settlements in the., north. It has not grudged the sacrifice, looking forward to the time when tho seed it has planted will produce'a harvest and bring bacis to it au increased trade and prosperity. The interests of Mastertou aro identical with those of the bush settlements, and we trust that this new political relationship will cenlent the hearty goodwill, which already subsists between them, .■
