Another Find of Clothes.
Dunkdin, May, Tlie clothes of a man wore found on the beaoli, near Lawyer's Head, last: evening, and it is supposed to be a' case of suicide. Iu the waistcoat pocket was found a slip on which was "David Elgin," A ,pocket-hand; kerchief was marked "J. Murphy!" Some of the servants at the Beach Hotol think they recognise the clothes as those worn by a man who called for a hottlo of boer and one of ginger ale', and at the samo time borrowed a corkscrew, which has not rotunied. | The prints of haro feet wore noticeI able loading from the clothes to the ocean. Soarcli was made all day along the beach for the body,'but without effect, Mountain Ascents. Napier, March 20. A party, including Mv Hill, inspector of schools, a representative of the Hawkes Bay Herald, and soveral local residents, recently ascended Ruapehu aud Ngaruhoe, They had a magnificent view from the crater of the former, and-were able ]to mako b closer inspection than any previous explorers. They found; tho lake in the crater to be boiliug- furiously,..a point which has hitherto 'been in dispute. It is believed that it lias boiled only.since the Tarawera eruption. Since then Ngaruhoe has also been much mote active, and in what used to bo known as tho Black Crater there waß an inverted cone of boiling sulphur, with evidences of recent activity.
Frozen Meat' Trade.
Auckland, March 20.
A circular baa been forwarded to farmers and stock owners in this distiict by tho Auckland Frozen Meat Company, stating that in view of an expected increase in their business, and to induco a greater supply in tbe niuttou market, I hey were prepared to kill, freeze, ship, pay freight, insurance, and all other charges incurred 1 from-the time of taking delivory at tbe yards to ilie sale ot the meat in London; and.the rendering of account salos at a fixed consolidated rale, and at the eaaie time to make liberal advances to owners. The principal conditions are- (1) The Company would require a guarantee ol 10,000 fat sheep per annum for two yearaj (2) the consolidated rate referred to would, bo for mutton, 2|d per lb; for lamb, 2 7-Bth per lb; (3) the Company would advance on prirno mutton id per lb, ewes and second class niuttou, 3id per Hi, good lambs 4Jd per lb; out of which the' consolidated charge would bo deducted.
. SUPREME COURT. Napier,-March 20, In charging the grand jury at the Supremo Court, the. Chief; Justice, (referring to a charge of shootiug cattle, sijid tl)e defence set up,was that the cattle pro-wild;' This', did not> seem to him satisfactory. He failed to see why persons should havo the right to kill a beast—eveu a wild one—unless it was trespassing : and damaging the property 'of the one who killed it' Bnt the law was that anyone could kill wild cattlo. If.tho grand jury thought, from their own experience, that tho law required alteration, and felt inclined to mako any suggestion on; tho'subject,'lie would convey,, it to the Government. The .Grand Jury, however, made 110 presentment on, .the subject., John B. Johnstone, commission agent, was convicted on two charges of forgery in altering receipts from Smaller amounts (o larger ones, Sentence was deferred.' At the conclusion of the iirst case Lis counsel, Mr Cresswoll, withdraw, informing the Court that ho had advised his oli'ent to the best of his ability, but he would not follow that advico.
