Wnu.ixwox, Monday. • . The eleventh annual conference of the United Fire Brigade Association comnieuctd 10-dav, thirty delegates being present. The report of the Executive Conimitteo stated .that during list ye.tr seven now brigades had joined the Association. The funds were still in a flourishing state, there being a credit balance ot £l3O, and assets to the value of £BO. The committee recommended that the annual subscription be reduced to ono'guinea. Tlio Excculivo were pleased to notice that ambulance drill was
spreading, ibo s rcliiniß for the past year showing that eleven brigades were receiving instruction in this class of work, The report alluded with regret to tlio loss the Association had sustained by the death of Captains Page (Wellington) and Liglnfoot (Nelson).
Tuesday, A start was made with'tho Fire! Brigades' Demonstration in the Basin Reserve this morning. The attendance is not very largo, but as a half holiday will be observed in town, thero should bo a large crowd" in the afternoon, 'Tlio weather is favorable, The first event on tho programme, hose and hydrant practice for fivo men, had to be passed over for tho time being, owing to an accident to the water plug,. Tlio next event, Manual Engine (dry , one nian, brought, out twenty-three competitors, tho following having finished :_ Wellington,' 57 4-fisecs; Masterton, TOsscs (2seca penally); Ashbnrlon, 59 2-sse'cS (ten penalty); Gore and Gordon, 47 2-Ssecs; Marton, 63 2-osecs; Timaru, 12secs 2 sees penalty.)

A man named John Harris committed suicide this evening, by shooting himself through the head, A rent collector called on Harris, who went into a bedroom and lay down on tbo bed ami shot himsolf I lie bullet entering his mouth and penetrating his brain, Tho deceased had been drinking. He was a carpenter, single and aged fifty, a native of England and an old resident of Wcstport,
