A curious point has arisen in regard to the validity or otherwise of a warrant of imprisonment. A Maori was sentenood about two years ago at Tauranga to-three months, but escaped whilst on hie way "to prison, A'few days since he BurveSfled himself at Maketu, when he was charged -1 with'' having""escaped from legal custody. The prisoner, however, was then ordered to Serve the three months', ment previously imposed, and the warrant whioh had been issued when the Maori was / first sentenced- was endorsed, The prisoner was brought to the Auokland Gaol, when the Governor, Mr.Reston, refused' to admit him, saying that he did not reoogisetbe old warrant, the term of the sentence having, long expired. The question was theu referred to Dr-Uile's, R.M„ who said that

though Mr Boston was justified in the coarse ho had taken, he .(Dr. Giles) believed the warrant valid, and that it. puld be a miscarriage : of justice if the Bentenoe imposed were not carried out. He recommended that the Government bo oommunioatod with on the subjeot. The Maori has, howover,- since been released from custody.

A sad occurrence is reported from Ohinewai. Mrs R. Kuir was sitting near bar house, when she saw a man thrown heavily from his horse. She. oalled for assistance, .but was herself so frightened that a few momentß afterward she fell dead from heart disease.

The Auckland Leper--1 Aookund, Feb 20. No reply has yet been received to the communications made with the Government in regard tothe Chinese leper, Ah Goon. The friends of the patient are inclined to. the belief that the disease is not leprosy but. lupus, a form of blood poisoning, as stated by. Kitchens, a seller of medicine, who' is treating the case, Dr Bakewelli who has bad' some years' experience of leprosy, maintains that there is no doubt that the latter is the malady whuh. has attacked Ah Goon, The patient came to Auckland direct from China abont five years ago.
