The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 5,1890.

Potato Cultore. Last season the bulk of the potatoes nsod iu Masterton came oyer tho Rimutaka, and fifty, or sixty pounds of our money weiit out of the district ( every week, for produoe which ought to have been grown on our own land. | Wo attach some importance to this ' point because when" we send money , out of tho district like this we drain ■ our resources needlessly and unwisely. Last year the potato, crop in the immediate neighborhbodof Masterton waS a failure, owing to a protracted I drought/: Brit in the bush districts . there wis : a, fair rainfall, and there ' was no roason why tho money which '. W-V6M sending, over the Rimutaka should not havo been expended at Eketahuim or Pahiatua. There' is i soil iu both these localities admirably ■. adapted for: growing tubers, and when it was found that the . early , crop about Masterton was a failure, our friends at Eketahuna should have taken the. opportunity offered of a good market,'and planted a big late ■ crop. Pabiatua, situated at a greater distance, is perhaps somewhat handicapped by cost of carriage froui ' supplying this town, but notwithstanding this drawback, some of the best potatoes sold in our local stores during the past spring months were grown there, and we trust proved as satisfactory to growers as they djd to consumers. It is very gratifying to notice that this season Eketahuna is taking that advantage of its excellent climate and fertile soil which it missed last year. Our correspondent in that township writing, in ,our last issue reported ' that" Messrs Turnor: ; ! and Co have the finest crop of potatoes yet seen, in tho district. Mr Turnor wont to considerable trouble and expense to import from England some specially selected seed of two or three varieties, being Champions, Magnum , Bonums, and one or two other kinds, fliey liavo several acres under cultivation. The. English potatoes \yere planted. alongside of; two Colonial varieties as a'est, and although the latter arc a good crop owing to tho excellent'quality of the land, they look' mere.; scrubbers beside the English"crop, ,They, are oil grown in drills Bft x Gin apart, and the tops of the Home seed liaye completely hidden the drills, Mr Turnor estimates tho crop • will' yield twe.nty tons to the acre. "' There are', some pseful., idopis ', embodied in the report' of" pup"'correspondent which deserve more than a passing liotice, The, contrast botweeh .'the English and the Colonial seed i)s described is a .striking one, and Mr Turnor ! ougbt to be able to make a big profit on his vonture by supplying tho market with improved seed. ■ There is Do4flJ)bt thatnlue!} of the failure which attends' the psto of potatoc-3' ill this ; district is'dllO'to' 'preventive causes, Here we have an instance of superior seed producing a superior • crbp, side by side with inferior seed yielding an inferior crop. Three months ago an illustration of the art of potato growing might be seen in the immediate Masterton,, i ; On> one. .Bide .of ,the ; road, a crop: of j/one]4ecles & tiiber grew luxuriantly', and on the sther'a, crop planted at.tlio samfi time was blistered anfl'Withered tip by frost.^This ■was anjiijstttuciS of; the;,difference between-hardy j f suitable to pur ohangelibi^pJiMte,,an3' V more sensitive'wriety;'tyjjijiii '# all prac.'' ticali 1 - Was worthless. olevably simple, and it is to be .regretted that many., growers are unsuccessful from not carrying them out. However, we may expect the' example of Mr Jl'unibr to be copied; and if only a score ,of enterprising favraera follow, liis lead, the Wairarapa will soon begin to export pptatoos instead ol" importing them. If half the tonnage to the acre which Mr - Tumor is said to- have secured could be realised on a laige area of land,' and. suitable ■ arrangements made for freight .with the railway authorities, our bush districts migbt supply the two or three thousand tons of this necessary of. life, which are annually consumed in the city of Wellington,

We notice that souie School Committees are supporting three Wairarapa candidates for the Eduoation Board vacancies ignoring tho iaot that Mr Fr&ser, an admittedly able representative of the City of Wellington, is a candidate for re-election. This is a blander, because, unless ■ Wellington is fairly treated the City Sohool Committees will be certain to retaliate by opposing all VVairarapa candidates. We adviso Wairarapa Committees in the interests of the district to vota for, the three retiring candidates. They may go further and faro worse I

Ought a servant who for a short period is prevented by sickness from carrying out his duties to be paid for the same? This question ms discussed at tho Borough Council's meeting last evening and it is one that most men settle for themselves without any difficulty in the case of private employees,.' Tho inslinot of most porsons is to. pay a servant who by no fault of his own is temporarily incapacitated from work but justice is a higher .trait than generosity, and we cannot condemn those councillors who last evening voted against paying Mr Reardou. It would'have been a cheap generosity to havo paid him at, the expense of tho ratepayers, but we feel that a sense of public duty made these councillors moro Strict in dealing with this.caso than they would have beon in determining a private claim, The course they took is likoly to bo somewhat unpopular but it was right in principle and wo fool bound to endorse it.

Messrs Lowca and loras announce an extensiyo general Bale for Saturday next Theroare .at present live patients in the Masterton Hospital and thoy are all progressinsrin a satisfactory manner. Mr F.: Chapman lias applied to tho Borough Council for a situ 011 which to orect a woinh bridge. MrMaltby gives his first entertainment at the Masterton Rink this evening. From the description givou by our Greytown correspondent in. yesterday's issue it will bo seen that Mr Maltby's Manipulation of tlio wheel must be something extraordinary, and ivo have no doubt he will have a crowded house. Pearson's band will play choice selections dntintf tlio evening, A party including Dr Alesaudor and Messrs J; M'Dunald and W M' Donald returned to Duncdin last wock from a trip to the Sutherland Falls, They report that the track being made by the Government party has been cut for only three miles up the Clinton Valley,' but that the falls can bo reached by M'Kinnon's track in two days' walkintr from the Head of Te Anau. The huts along tho track are now complete, and it is therefore unnecessary to take a tent.

A dog cart, belonging to Mr W, t). Bidwill,, was brought into Masterton to-day for repairs, The owner was returning from a meeting of the Feathdrston Road Beard on Saturday, aiid having somo business to transact ho stopped and left his vohiclo oil the road for a |few minutes, Something startled the horso, which bolted, and was not pulled up until ho had gone a considerable distance, and lwd considerably damaged the conveyance. The animal, a valuable trotter, escaped without serious injury.

On receipt, in London of reports of tlio Auckland meeting of tlio Bank of Now Zealund (writes thp London correspondent o( the Sydney Morning Herald) soino of the financial papers, which had made it a pruotico for years past to atlaok tlio management of certain large New Zealand institutions, indulged in comments upoii tlio meeting which depressed the value of the bank's shares. Th? chief paper which adopted thoso tactics van the Financial Tinjei, not an organ of much reputo or large oiroulaiion. It accepted all Mr Buckley's statements 03 genuine, and expressed the opinion that tlio bank ought to 30 into liquidation, This extreme view, while producing some advorso effect on the market was laughed at by everybody whoso opinion on .New Zealand subjects was worth having, The quotablo value of the shares fell about £2, but it has now recovered. This depression, howevor, had littlo effeot on tlio real valUo of tho stock. Such was the confidence of buyers that they would nut soli, and it was with groat difficulty that small parcels could be picked up at all. I may mention, as an illustration of this, that one gentleman wanted to buy 100 shares but it took him three days to get them, and then 110 hud 'to pay IQa aboyo tlie quoted market price, Reports have been received from the colony that telegrama havo beon sent nut from London indicating a rußh to withdraw dopbsits from the bank hero. There is not ono word of truth in this statement, The bank has been doing ordinary, business without the smallest exhibition of panic and depositors .aro briugiug in their money as usual. Aftor the transactions of the ordinary routine business, .Captain Pickering tn a few well chosoh words, presented tho Brigade with the handsome banner used in the recent Jubilee procession, and whioh .was painted specially for him by Mr T.
