He would be a Sport.
In Fahiatua there dwells a desciple of 'fuhalcain, who Somewhat late in life determined at any cost or risk to acqnira tbo art of successfully navigating a horse between Pahiatua and Woodville, Hoping no doubt to enlist the sporting interest on behalf of his particular smithy he purchased a colt from a local' sport, and commenced the rather tsdious process of educating bimsolf to the saddle. The horses name was" Patience," and it was represented to the purchaser tbat its naturo was but feeblyexpressed in the name. From tho indifferent success attending the rider's efforts to | attain perfection it would appear he was" not to the manner born," The rider is now disabled, the charger is now madly careering towards the Wnimate Plains, and the only prayer 'of the suffering man is that he may bo spared the unerring cunuing of his right band that lie may, (in tho artless western way) ".settle the hash l 'of the instigator of all his misfortunes. In reporting llie most eventful year • of our school, we may look back with w . gratitude on what we have been able p.. !to accomplish. A. year since- we ' ; scarcely dared to hope tfet this anniversary service ■would be held in our own ro jm. The building of this . room has been the cause of some self-denial and persistant effort Oil the purt of our friends. The cost so far, includiug the land, is a little over £IOO, £7O of which has .been given in money, labour, or material, the. balance being lent by the Wesloyau Loan Fund Committee, and iB repay-, ablo in equal quarterly instalments during 4 years. To meet this-wo ■ have to raise £ll7s (id per quarter—in addition to the working cost of the school, Wo have nt present 48 boys aiid 86 girls on the roll, with ail ; average attendance of 45. There are 10 teachers, whose attendances aro - over 7, Our library is in an almost used up state, new books being badly wanted. During the year we have raised £llos for the Home Mission Fund. We have not beon able (as in former years), to give the illustrated periodicals, but hope, to bo able toWfc, ' so again during next year. We lost a valued helper during the yeat, Mr Boult having left the district. The receipts for the year apart from ' building fund were L 8 lis 6d, and the expenditure LBlos. Addreßses were delivered by the ohairman, Messrs Jones, senr., Burton, and Rigg. Recitations were given by John Burton and Gwendoline Powell, The children sang several of their hymns well, and after a voto of thanks moved by Mr Daniell a very pleasant meeting wbb bnught to a , close with tho benediction, We understand the collections on Sunday were - larger than on any former occasion.
