Aockmnd, January 15. An important discovery is reported from Dargaville to day, During the sinking of an artesian well in the centre of the town, a dark blue and green cement-like stuff, containing black sand, was found at a depth of 58 feet from the surface ;soine bright specks wero seen, and wlion the stuff was examined under a magnifying glass it. was'seen to 'contain what appeared to be fine free gold. A Bmall parcel of the Bluff.'.about .81bs,' was panned off, and arosidmim of black sand and floury gold was obtained. The stratum at present known to contain tho gold is only about 12ins. through, the bore is only 2|ins in diameter, so that no large quantity of the auriferous stuff can be obtained until a shaft is put down, This is to be dono forthwith. The artesian woll is being sunk on the side of the road, and the surounding laud belongs to the Dargaville family.

Caledonian Gathering.

A full holiday was observed to-day for the'annual Caledonian gathering. The weather -was glorious. About 8000 were' present. The .Ladies' Bracelet was wou by J. Goodall. Tho Open ruMoniau Handicap was wou by Wilson, a stranger hero, who had it all his ownway. The mile race was won by Peebles (Waipawa). Tho chief prizes for dancing fell to T, Mackny and W. P. Stuart, both from llieSuiith Island, and Maokay also carried off the, honours for bagpipe playing. A feature of the day was the wrestling of two Maoris; the first easily disposed of the well-known ;wrestler O'Brien, and the second Maori conquered O'Brien's conqueror,

Welusgion, Thursday. The Postal Department have received an official cable message from the Agent-Goneral, London, stating that according to latest advices to hand from New York, the Austnhan mails were not destroyed in the train which was wrecked at Nebraska on Saturday last.

The third wool sales of the season were held to-day by. A. Buckland and Sons, Hunter and Nolan, and Binney and Sons. Taking the quality of the wool into consideration, the prices in the recent sales wore fully maintained. Thero were no Southorn buvers.
