The Wairarapa Daily THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1889. The Masterton School Water Supply.

Wk published in our last issuo tlio result; of the deputation from the MastevtQi) Bebop] Committee which waited yesterday .on tlio Education Board tp urge a cjaini lor a, grant in aid of tbo now water supply. When last autumn it was discovered that the beverage quaffed by the children was an abomination, and that an absolutely pure supply was obtainable at a moderate expenditure, no time should jiaye Jjean lost in providing it, The Committee,' \l it Ift'l lift the Board at its hack, could count on (lie support of parents and depend upon the Town Lands Trust for assistance. On a previous occasion tho latter body /mn}e. to the rescue of the Committee when it appropriated tho cadet fund to a gift distribution, on/I jf it saved it from a folly of this kind it would certainly have helped it out of any bole in which jt might haye been placed by accompljsjiing a work of manifest public utility, Tjuj Ooijjniifctec deserves credit for its contimrcd efforta to provide the supply, but tlio manner in which it writ to work was a little unfot'tiiiitik At tile first onsot the proposal to bring a supply to the school wa3 baulked by the chairman of the Committee wanting, like Hoses in the conuudrum, /.' to We a liitle jirdfj oiit of the water," and»% Mr Perry came co the rescue, Mr KonaJ' did not appear to display any great amount of enthusiasm in carrying .out the project. However, a .contract has been let at last, ojjd >)ow the only qufistjoii is where fchei)p,ejy.ifi jiftv for '( js lo gome from •? U ari estin)a{o

'' «nj of the Town Lauds Trusi, .. deputations from Masterton to Wei- ; lington and Wellington to Masterton, j it would probably approximate to , the entire cost of the work. Of ] course the Education Board oughUo 1 givo a liberal subsidy towards Hie ' dost of tbo supply. It is clearly (

i responsible for (bo former inadequate service, and thd onus of making an ample provision now devolves upon it. Tlio project now being carried out is undoubtedly the very best practicable arrangeme!:' .-.£ jyo fail to see how tl)c.J3oavd can reasonably object to endorse it. The little hitch appears to bo a display of feeling between tbo Board and tbo Committee. The latter body has been more remarkable for i\\e farther in re than the aiaviltr in modo, and the former lias got its back up a little. The Board can exercise so much power, and tho Committee so little, under the Education Act, that when a concession is required it is hotter for a committee to depend upon moral suasion rather than blatant remonstrance In past years the Master'on School has been very liberally treated by the Board, and this probably was due to the fact that former committees stood well at the Education office, and a friendly feeling existed between the two bodies. We are of the opinion that more rccontly the school bus received scant consideration from the Board, and we regret that the relation between the two bodies is more strained than formerly. Whatever the merits of the case now in dispute may be, it is evident that the Board has the whip hand, and that if it grants the concession asked for it will do bo from a sense of duty and not from a kindly feeling towards the local committee. It is true tb;;t there are sonio members of the local committee who are moderate men, and who, if allowed to have their own way, would bring about a better understanding with the Board, We will hope that their counsels will prevail, and that the difficulty in finding ways and means for the very necessary water supply will speedily, be solved.
