R, Wallis, a claim for .£IOOO, lor malicious prosecution, was concluded, after two days' hearing, in a verdict for thodefcndaiit, On the Mortoti Mains estate, and before and after lin left, defendant discovered that they had in their possession largo quantities of bed. clothes, stores, etc., belonging to him; indeed, he put it that the house was stripped of everything but tlio heavy furniture. The Helms were arrested, prosecuted, and discharged, hence the action. Helms accounted for these by stating they were part of the gifts of Mrs Wallis, who had died in the interval, The rest were taken by them by mistake for their own. It was proved by the Railway Do purtment that Helms arrived at Morton Mains with 9 cwt and took away 18 cwt of goods. Sir R. Stout, for the defendant, characterised the action as a most impudent one.

The Temperance Question.

At the Baptist Union the following resolutions were passed: -" That this Conference rejoices in the records of the spread of total abstinence, principles aud agencies alike, in tho Band of Hope and Gospel Temperance aud other 'agenoies for adults, and it hereby records it's hearty sympathy with the movement, and commends to the earnest support of all our churches the tomperanee question. It further advises and request the ministers to preach an annual sermon on tho subject on the last Sunday in November. 2. That this Assembly hereby records its emphatic protest against tho general broach of the Sunday closing clauses of the Licensing Acts; it also protests against theromo\al from the jurisdiction of the local Licensing Commilttoes to tho fiaihvay Commissioner of the power to license railway refreshment stalls; and, further, it protests against tho granting of such licenses by the Commissioners, whereby encomiigement is offered for tbo sale of liquor on Sundays. A deputation from the various temperance bodies waited on the Union and presented mi address,
