JUBILATION.
In response fo.au by Mr H. l?liii|ips, tbroi'gl) t'be press, a numerously attended meeting was held in the Occidental.'Hotol, Masterton, to consider what steps should be takod to eclebrato in this district the fiftieth anniversary of the settlement of the Colony of New Zealand, The i .Opening, of the meeting was delayed for a shdrMiine to allow of tjm attendance of the mayor" and councillors, who ha/1 been specially invited,- "fit were sitting in Council that night, On bis. arrival, the jtfuyor, }l? A. WBenall,was voted to the chair.
After a slight discussion m to tbe proper date of the settlement of the Colony, it was resolved on the moliou ofMr R. J. li'ilton, seconded by Mr L, J, Hooper, that the 22nd.of January be celebrated as the Jubilee of the Colony, that being the day upon which tbe first settlors arrived, iu the Colony, It was resolved'that a; MONSTER picnic be held in the Masterton Park Oval, and that all children in tbe Wairarapa be invited. A large and influential committee woe appointed, with power to add to their iiuinber,i. to, carry; out.tbe necessary arraagements. Mr R, E, Hornblow was appointed secretary. A subscription list was opened in the room and headed by Mr W, H, Beetham with three guineas, Before the meeting closed nearly 120 was collected, The preliminary business being arranged the meeting adjourned till Thursday next at 8 p,m,, at the same place, Vhen the programme, k. will be drawn up, A general invitation was extended to ill wfco cared to attend to bB present,
