THE MAYORAL ELECTION.
Declaration of the Poll j ( Shortly after six o'clock tho poll J■ waa doclured l>y the returning olliccr,! Mr E. Brown, ;ia follows: I Cullen, William ... 70 | Heron, George ... IN j Inlorraal ...... 2 jj Considerable cheering and tumult , ensued amongst tho crowd of about 150 persons assembled to learn the viesult. Mr Heron ascended the steps am', | said "gentlemen 1 tnank yon for ( having placod ma at the top ol the j poll. I hardly thought it eo.uld lmve t been otherwise seeing that Mr lleiiall promised me his support, and I have • lio doubt he votsd for mo. I have r only again to thank you." Mr W. Cullen, amidst cheers and , Bomo confusion, said he thanked the 70 electors who had voted for him. Ho considered that in coming forward lie liud simply done his duty, but lie . could hardly hope to be returned > considering the lar f ';e amount of ( talent that was arrayed against him, He was not, however, in the least ashamed of the position he occupied under the circumstances. (Applause.) L He proposed a vote of thanks to the \ returning officer. Mr Renal!, who was received with cheers and laughter, said" the cold , ' wind blows the heron south" • (Laughter). Ho emphatically denied having pledged himself to support Mr Heron, as had been stated (Cr That was a falsehood. What lie said was that if Cr Gappor, Heron, or any other councillor came forward lie would not be nominated (Cr Chamberlain : " The Star stated that you j promised to support them.") He did not caro what the Star stated; he ; knew what lie said, and he would ' not bo sucli a fool as to commit him- ' self to anything of the kind. (Cr [ Chamberlain: "The Star said so . You said at a council meeting that if any of the old councillors dime out; you would support them.") J Mr Renall; That's a lie. lam tool old to make any pledge -of the kind, j and you know it, j Mr Chamberlain: J t was reported I in the Star. j Mr Hogg then mounted the steps, j and said the Star was there and j would speak for itself (Applause and j i uproar,) ■ He explained that the re-! port of Mv Email's remarks on tta j evening that lie intimated his inten- j tion not too seel; re-election was j jjniuch condensed, and a slight blunderj 'had been mado which was corrected' in a paragraph a few night's after- j • wards. What Mr Renall did say w. i that if any of the old councillors i, came forward he would not bo nom- j inated. It had been stated in the : ' Daily that Mr Iloron was induced to j como forward because Mr Renall had pledged himself to support him, This was ono of those half truths that was worse than a whole lie, because the correction of the report appeared long before the | nomination and Mr lienail himself had publicly declared that he stood unpledged to support anyone. As j usual, the falsehood was diligently ■ circulated 911 the day of tho election j when it was too late to contradict it, j Mr Kenall said tho reports of the ( press or any amount of peoplo would j net convert a falsehood into a truth.! He knew his position perfectly well ■ and explained to the Council that if any old member cume forward he would not be nominated. He had no abjection to one of the Councillors coming forward if ho would support the water scheme. , Mr Ileron said they had always j? been willing to have the water supply. Mr Renall replied they stopped tho lead when tho works were about to be inspected for tho Insurance Companies, and by doing so imposed unnecessary burdens on the residents. I Cries of no, 110.) His wator scheuio would do more to benefit the town than all the box and dice of them. (Laughter and applause.) If they wanted it he wa's ready at any time to arrange for a water supply, and on tho present occasion, if f> Heron in his address had shown that he wished to assist tho town with a water supply he would havo'. done what lie could to | have induced Mr Cullen to withdraw.
