GLADSTONE.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
• We are hero in the midst of shearing oporations, and some of the minor stations have already tinished. As far as quantity is concerned the clip is not bad, though in some cases quality might bo better, by reason of the scarcity of food during the exceptionally dry winter. The rains of the latter end of lust mouth have done no inconsiderable damage to some of the paddocks along the river banks, and destroyed a good deal of the fencing, but these damages, which are easily repaired, Lave been considerably outweighed by the immense good that they havo done to the arable land, Both crops aud gardens look very promising indeed. So do the pastures which give hopes of abundance of feed for the coming summer.
The population here appear to be so very inucb engrossed with their daily pursuits that they have but little time for other tilings, and although our community is not so small asuot to possess any public spirited individuals at all, tliey sadly want stirring; up a bit to wake thcui out of their every day jog—tiot kind of existence. For' instance last winter there was a great talk about building a town hall, and a public meeting was called to consider the matter, The meeting was well attended, .Resolutions were passed, subscription lists circulated, and trustees appointed, Mr Buchanan generously offered a piece of ground, and here the matter dropped. Up to this moment no one lias heard anythiug concerning the subject, In the meanwhile shareholders 1 suppose have to live m hopes and to see the longed /or town hall as it visionary apparition in the distant future. It
is to be hoped that Ihe trustees will see their way clear to mako ut move in the matter, as a place of that kind is very much needed here.
