The Wairarapa Daily WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1889. The Masterton Pastoral Show.
The show yesterday was a jraor one ! This is not a nice thing to say, much more to write, but it is better to be honest, and if there is anything to be said to our detraction, let us say it ourselves. It is not nice to tell a President and a Committee who have labored pluckily to make a good Bbow, that they have in a measure failed ; but looking at the disadvantageous conditions under which they have worked, tht result is not by any means discreditable 'to them. The main causes which made yesterday's show weak are sufficiently obvious, though one or two of the more prominent reasons require some little comment and explanation. One very great drawback hftn been the long illnfKs of the secretary, Mr Walker, Now (hat there are three shows to be ptovided for, it hap become newwiry to cnnvmn for entries. The secretaries ot the Carterton and Hutt shows havo been wonderfully diltgßnt in tins work, and their efforts have naturally tended to deprive the Masterton show of many entries which in the ordinary course of tiling would otherwise have come to it. Of coortsc this opposition is perfectly Inir nnd legitimate, and the expovlnnccH of tlm Mnstcrton Committee c|if» ynnr in thin direction will no doubt Im profitable lo it on future occatiionH, Another drawback, about which n flowddm-Hfdo defirfloofflorene&sisf ftilt hihl ux\>vn#ml, is tint milliner In which tho sfawkowiiaro of the W«iraiM|m Imve hold aloof from the nliow. Mimy of them, it to well known, Imve nut their faeeg against exhibiting fit two «litnv» in iho Wairantpn, and Uiey Imve had good Mason for inking nitcH n coursa, VV> can rowllly flyuip»6hlflfl with their defttre to sen m nmnl|2uimilr>d hliow, but wo fail to umi flow they can logically curry out lli|» view by (uUbllHliing n (Mill one »t tlm Ilntt, It ii miid itint by their desertion the jtLutturtflti Association prutilicitlly («so(vi'9 itiiotf into a fanners' chili, and it ia frit by many Hint thu fitrmciH in this district"arc Hlrotitf enough to aiskn a Nuccnaafiii show without Unur aid. Wo slioutrl, however, very much regret to sen tlm atockowncrs floparatftig !beimselvt!fi altogether from the furmeni, and wt; hope thst the HPccrainu on the present occasion is a lempurary one, eiisintt our- cxcepiionul circuraslanci's. The interests ot tru,' district require not only an iinmlEjsnmiion or ei nvr co . ln " mittees, but union and co-operation betwitei. stockownera and fHrmera, it would be very unfortunate if such union and co-o]ienition should become impossible. There in » feelinf; now that it h*.i hcwi rendered almost so, and that the fault lies rather with the large sicck : owners. If on the present occasion ! ill interested in |mstorsl nnd agriculIturKl pursuits have not worked ! together, let us hope it will he the lastoua on whicl they will be found i at variance. While frankly admitting that yesterday's Show, taken ns a wholn, was poor, it would be a mistaku ; to HS.snme that its low condttinn is at rII likely to bo permanent, Tnern is too much grit about those who are associated with its rqannggtsieut frir theru to ho disheartened by a revcrm ariiiinj; out of ROniawhist unexpected difticulties. There were three judgee in the suddlery class at the Show yesterday. One of them was heard to remark, "My grandfather was a Butcher, my father was a butcher, and I am a butcher and if you ask me to judge stitching I simply say I can't do it." Being informed that he was only expected to judsre which was the better cotUdion he consented, and enquired how many hands each firm employed. He was told " two and four" respectively. "Well," he said, "it's safer [to give first prize to the one with four hands as in the event of thu defeated competitor kicking up a row we should be three to two and would be on the safe side." Tha prizes, strange to say, were awarded a3 suggested, thouph not as a consequence. Those out on Btrike are determined to stick together till their demands are conceded, and are patiently waiting the remainder coming out on Thursday evening. Sympathy was expressed by the members of the Boatmakers' Union present, and several letters and telegrams were read offering promises of support. The Dunedin Operative Bootmakers* Unitti has posted £3O to assist those on strike in thn Kaiapoi factory, Canterbury, and will consider the question of further assistance. The Tailaresses' Union has decided to give £lO toward the same object ; also to make a weekly levy of 10 per c :nt on the wages of all workers in the I nion, to be continued till the strike is settled.

The aunual show under tbe auspices of the Maßterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held at' Messrs Lowss and lorns' yards yesterday (Tuesday). Tue day as regards weather could not have been better—cloady, with a faint bresze which tempered the heat—and. aa a consequence the attendance beat: all previous records, there being.some four thousand people on the grounds. The railway authorities arranged convenient services, with reduced fares, and a very large number of visitors took advantage of this mods of travelling to the show. The gathering was quite a representative one. farmers and others interested from one end of the district to the other putting in an appearance. "We noticed a good many people took advantage of the extensive grounds to drive right in with their vehicles, and from this point vl vantage secured a better view of the various contests. The want of a stand to witness the jumping is somewhat felt, many ladies being quite unable to see this event from the back of the crowd. A great many more people could getagUmpse of this competition, too, if the fences guarding the jumps were made V shaped. The entries were not so numerous as in previons years, but there was a large increase in the number of exhibitors. The exhibits were pretty evenly balanced between the pastoral and the agricultural, there being a splendid show of machinery and farm implements, while the entries in horses were a decided credit to the district. Competent judges, who have visited pretty well all the shows in tbe colony, aver that the hacks of the Wairarapa, of all classes, cannot be beaten anywhere. Every arrangement was made for the convenience of visitors. Mis Cranmer had charge of the publicans' booth, while a refreshment booth supplied the more substantial needs. The fancy goods vendor, 1 cheap jack, and whirligig men appeared to be doinga good business. Mr Pearson's fine band rendered some excellent selections of music throughout the afternoon and tended much to the enjoyment of the day. Owing to the strong competition in tbe various hack classes, the jumping contest did not siarfc punctually at the time arranged; but the officers ' of the Association worked with a will throughout the day, and everything was got tliroughin good tims, the crowd dispersing about five o'clock. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr E. J. Fitton, who took up the onerous duties of secretary at the ■ last moment, and carried out his task to the satisfaction of everyone. ] HoBSEB.
In thoroughbreds over four years only thrse entered for competion, A. W. Cave's Piscatorious, W. Neill's Lord Mondeville, and W. Corlett's Master Agnes, and they were placed in the order named. These horses are so well known in Uiedistrict that theer is no occasion to special by mention their points. G. M. Drummond's mares with fcals, Euraour and Barbette took first and second respectively in their class without opposition and this entitled him to a special prizo value three guineas far most points obtained in the thoroughbred class, Messrs Vallanco and Mace took a first and second respectively for dry mares. A protest was entered by Mr Lett against the winning team on the ground that they were not the bona fide property of the exhibi. tor, bat it was not sustained. The farmers of Masterfcon district are to be complimented on the splendid breed ot horses they possess. The latter also took'a first in. two ewes over eighteen months and & first end highly commended in ewes under that age. & Meredith took the highest number of prizes to Lincoln ; ewes scoring ho less than three firsts; onei second, and a special. J Macara ;taking one second for two. ewes, with lambs at foot. There was excellent quality arid close competition; in Romnoy Marsh. The judges remarked it had very rarely heen their pleasure :to handle finer sheep. F Gray Bhowed some grand rams under eight* teen months and took two first prizes. F. Monckton secured first for a splendid pair over that age*E Chamberlain taking secand and a first for single ram. In ewas J Judd,jurirandFSloncktori,divided. the honours fairly between them, the former taking two firsts one second i and a third, the latter two firsts. In ; : Hampshire Downs F Monckton took : six first prizes and W Perry, obtained : thehighestforthebestpen offive ewes* ■ under ISmonths. In sheep.fitforfreez- ■ ing purposes, A. Boos. j There was a good exhibition of sheep and cattle dogs. la the former section D. Guild's Vic took first and special, William Perry's Kliep and Spring following. A. E. Perston's Shark took first in cattle dogs, and E. H. Bcauchamp's Sharp second. C. Wagland's dog was highly commended. Pigs. There was both quality and condition in the majority "of pigs shown, A. Elkius being the large3t exhibitor, and took champion prm for most points. Berkshire and Yorkshire were the chief classes, and Mr A. EUrins secured in the former no less than seven prizes, and two firsts in the latter. W. .Ferry stood next on the roll with four prizes. C. Waqland obtained first for the best fat pig, with a splendid white Yorkshire.
PABM AND DAISY IMPLEMENTS. This was a very attractive clasa and well represented. The goods shown ware of first class workmanship and showed all the latest improvements in labor saving, E. McEwen, as agent for P. and D. Duncan; Lowes & lorns for Keid and Gray, and E. W. Mills & Co, were the chief exhibitors. Duncan's collection of agricultural implements took first, and Raid & Gray's second prize. In double furrow ploughs each of these firms was awarded a first prize, at which there was much dissatisfaction expressed. It was stated the judges did not agree in their judgment, and I instead of culling in an umpire to decide, they sorved both exhibitors alike. Bold & Gray took in addition a second in seed sowing machines, and a first in reapers and mowors, P. and D. Duncan, in addition to thmw already meiiliunad, auourcd fiinL ouch for horsehoß and rtdger, culli-j valor, seed sowor, and a set of disc liiiitdwb,, E. A very 's§«se!a?e show or furniture exhibited by \V. ffliitt attracted great attention for its superior workmanship and design, lie was deservedly swarded a, first priM for his mnelt sdmired collection Oar local seddlers too, 3. Elliott and Townsend and Cowper contributed Ssere share by exhibiting lliais WKres, in the manufacture of which both firms are justly celebrated. The 'award fortbe best collection fell to I lot of tbe latter firm. In vehicles Boss and Muir took one first and two second prizes with three entries; and E. Dixon with two exhibits took fl.'st and second. The vrorkmanehip and finish of all the vehicles shown was really excellent. The ladies dogcart for which S. Dixon obtained «. first prize is worthy o£ special notice. It was of English ,&«&" American material, madly lined and vsxnisheJ.' The grand festnre of the job was the wheels. They were nicely rounded in; this style is ft recent introduction. The vehicle was fit to compete in any show in its class in the Colonies, and was a credit to the exhibitor, who was also the maker.
In produce there ought to have been & much better show tha,n was made_ yesterday.. There were two exhibits of dressed flax, J. Ecbs taking iirst prize. In scoured wools i R, J. Sixteen horses -contested in this avenfc ia the presence of a mixed Assemblage estimated to number over three thousand. The competi-tion-was very exciting. Almost the first horse that started, threw its rider,; Mr John Cotter at the first; impediment. .' The horse's \ : struck the top rail and his hind feet;, also catching, the animal after _ shootir,g its nder clean over its bead, fell, and in recovering itself nearly trod on the head of it's late rider, who was lying stunned and motionless. ' Cotter -was picked up aitd; : borne from the arena. He was promptly/attended by Dr; Milne, who was fortunately at" hand. It was quite a relief to the crowd when it was announced that the sufferer was coming round, and would :soo'a be all right again. It ia feared Cotter has received some internal injuries, but at present the fact cannot be; ascertained. A second rider, Mr M, Meredith, had a nasty spill, injuring, but not'seriously, his leg: He had made some splendid jumping, but in the last trial lie came to grief. The results of the; contest are ; given elsewhere;
