Not many miles from Masterton is situated the peaceful and thriving little township of Blunlietahunn. Nestling as it does among the black logs and withoring stumps of what was once a grand forest, its extreme
beauty is only exceeded by its deep tranquility and. repose. For some weeks past that calm Ims been disturbed, that repose rudely awakened, by the frequent and unexpected visits of Mephistophelean vendors of literature. Each seemed worse than tho one preceding, but for unmitigated cheek and pertinacity, the last (bo was in the prophetic lino) m the worst. We had word he was coming; we were looking out for him. By a series of careful movements we had evaded all the others. In the afternoon we had watched tins one into a store, and then had fled to our humble whare far in the mazy bush. The sun was just going to bed, and (Josh Billings says) " tho heavens were blushing at the performance," when, without a moment's warning, in the twinkling of an eye, before us stood the fiend! It was no use. Escape was impossible. Batter to patiently submit, so sitting wearily on a stump we awaited the attack, He commenced smilingly to take tho wrapper off Ins specimen, which he stated was the list of several hundred thousand copies, and was saved solely for our benefit, From his account (which lasted twenty-five minutes) it was , a wonderful work; it was a complete epitome not only of prophecy, but of history, politics, and geography. It solved all sorts of questions, and the price was, well—that of course depended upon tho binding. Sheepskin so much, calf this, morocco that. And then ho calmly added, " Which binding do you prefer 1 I will bring the book on the sth December." We had hitherto remained dumb, but now managed to say tbat our preference was neither. He was about to speak when a happy thought seemed to strike us, and we said: " Ah, by-the-bye, are you a subscriber to the Wairarapa Daily, the leading journal of (not only this district) but New Zealand, Australia, South Sea Islands, England, Europe, and the known world, tho best advertising medium in existence, read by rich and poor, old and young, and both the sexes, If you will allow mo I'll take your name for a little advertisement, and then people will know you're coming, your business will increase tenfold, and —but by this time he was half way across the paddock, it was too much for him. Tho . tables were turned, the bookfiendwasanniliilatod. Tho grand remedy was discovered; by giving him a dose of his own mixture he had been turned sick! When I started he shuddered visibly, and the torture (modified as it was) that he daily and hourly was inflicting was more than he could bear. And now, gentle reader, if he visits you just offer him a contra, offer to sell him your house or somebody else's. Anything, it does not mattor what, It will fix him, and he will travel off your premises like greased lightning.
