A good deal of correspondence lias taken place re the price of bread and tho alleged light weight. The price is higher than at Dunedin or Auckland, and now it is assorted that in some cases journeymen bakers have to work (including Sunday labor) ninety hours a week, which one correspondent describes as a murderous toil, It is also stated that somo bakers only receive thirty shillings a week, or less than fivepence an hour.

Tho seven year old daughter of Mr I'arrett, Taifipu, w«s drowned on Monday in the River Halswell, near her parent's lionso, She fell into 7ft of water. An alarm was raised by another girl, The father and mother ran to the spot, but, as tho child was sinking and tho father could not swim he daml not to venture in, An effort was made to roach tho child with a ladder, but it proved fruitless. Finally a boat was used and the body recovered, but too late to save life, At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. Tho skeleton of a man has been found in the bed of the Okuku river, at the confluent of the Ashley, near White Rock Station. SUPREME COUiJT. Wanganui, October 10.
Tho Supreme Court resumed to ; day at 10 a.m, W. Whelan pleaded pot guilty to a charge of false pretences; Thos McNaugliton pleaded not guilty to a charge of abduction; Pat Dillon, carnally knowing, and W, McDennott, rapo, also pleaded not guilty. William McDermott's trial occupied the whole of the day, ilr Hogg appearing for tho defence. There was no evidence for tho defence, and tho jury returned to Court after aij absence of fifteen minutes with a verdict of gjjifty. £jente'uce was deferred till to-morrow. Daniel Phjllips, who was found guilty yesterday of larceny as a bailee of a horse, etc, was to-day sentenced to J2 mouths' hard labqiirfofbach offence, sentences to run concufrently.
